An alien ship crash lands onto Earth with an alien emerging who looks exactly like humans. Mankind is still in the iron age and Kainan (Caviezel), the alien, finds himself in Norwegian lands amongst Vikings. Kainan was carrying with him a deadly alien beast called the Moorwen which escapes from his ship when they land. Determined to get his prisoner back, Kainan goes on a hunt but is captured by Wulfric (Huston) a Viking prince and is escorted to King Hrothgar. Moorwen has already started destroying villages and eating humans and the Vikings are unaware of the power of the beast. Kainan confesses his true identity to the Vikings and offers help to capture the beast and bring peace once more to their lands. The movie is a very typical story of a hero who slays a beast and that of aliens on Earth. It offers nothing exceptional whatsoever and has probably one of the most cliched stories and climax that can be possible. If this very specific genre interests you, then only must one take the chances of watching this movie. Otherwise, this is a complete washout.

The second movie of the very famous Batman comic series. A deformed baby is born in Gotham city who is thrown away by his parents due to his deformity. The young child gets raised by penguins in the city zoo and lives within the sewers. Years later, this child emerges as the Penguin (DeVito) and announces that he wants to trace back his identity and discover himself. Max Shreck (Walken) is Gotham city's biggest industrialist and wants to install more power plants within the city. Although the city currently generates a surplus, Max is trying to convince investors and the mayor that Gotham would soon need more power and he is investing for the future. In reality, power plant would actually drain power from the cities power grid and this is discovered by Max's secretary, Selina Kyle (Pfeiffer). Selina, originally an introvert, survives a murder attempt by Max and converts herself into the Catwoman and hatches a plan of revenge against Max. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne aka Batman (Keaton) smells a rat when The Penguin decides to run for mayor and starts to get down and discover what the actual reason is. The movie is quite similar to the earlier movie with only the villain changing and the addition of The Catwoman. What makes this movie very desirable is Danny DeVito and his fabulous performance of The Penguin. Somehow, Batman's villains have always had good performances, including the new and old versions. The movie is a very normal super-hero entertainer but is worth that entertainment value and is enjoyable.

Starring: Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Camilla Belle, Djimon Hounsou, Ming-Na, Cliff CurtisThere have always been movies about another race of human beings on the planet that are unknown to us and posses special powers. What differs within these movies is how outlandish the 'other' human species can be conceived to be. There exists a breed of humans that posses super-human powers and are classified within themselves according to the power they posses. A governmental body to control their kind, called the 'division', is after a suitcase. Everything else in the movie is one big question mark leaving you with a thousand unanswered questions with the biggest one being, why is Nick Grant (Evans) and Cassie (Fanning) even involved in all of this. Although the movie tries to build upon a decent concept and has an above average ending attached to it, most of the story is a complete washout and seems to be glued together in a highly tacky manner. It does a decent job of being a fantasy movie with decent action, but that's all there is to it. Don't try bothering to figure out whats happening cause its not worth it.

Princess Kasumi (Aoki) is the leader of an Asian clan whose brother has been missing since a long time. Hayabusa (Kosugi) her brothers' best friend has not been able to find his body, leading Kasumi to believe that he might still be alive. She escapes from the temple and gets labelled as an outcast by her clan, forcing Ayane (Malthe), a ninja, to chase her and kill her. Tina (Presley) is a professional wrestler, looking at doing something more 'real' with her life. Christie (Valance) is a master thief and along with Tina and Kasumi, the three are invited to the DOA tournament. The tournament features a group of people skilled in their own form of fighting and combat to battle it out to win $10 million. Kasumi's brother, Hayate (Chou) had abandoned the clan to take place in the previous tournament and Kasumi believes he is still alive. DOA is headed by Dr. Victor Donovan (Roberts) whose secret plan is to inject each of the participants with nano-bots that would track and record each of the participants combat moves. The moment the movie takes off, you quickly realise that you have booked yourself for 90 mins of atrocity. The movie aims to showcase an overdose of bikini-clad woman doing kung-fu with each other for most of the movie. Although each of the participants are supposed to 'excel in their own field of combat' everyone seems to have the exact same martial arts technique for fighting. Don't waste your time on this, even the bikini-clad women are not all that worth it.
Thumbs up: You can give credit to the action, but it gets extremely repetitive

Its amazing how the performance of a single person can cast such a huge effect on the entire movie. The Joker (Ledger) is a psychotic villain at Gotham who seemingly does random acts of death and destruction without any certain motive. The Batman (Bale) is Gotham's vigilante who has managed to keep the cities streets more or less clean from what it previously was. Harvey Dent (Eckhart) is the new DA and has infused stringent measures that have kept the mobs illegal money at bay. The mob bosses are worried cause they cannot get their money out of the city and The Joker offers his services as a cure. He wants The Batman to remove his mask and if he doesn't, one person will be killed everyday. The Joker was a man who never planned anything, who went with the flow and did whatever he felt like. His only ambition was to show that the good may not be all that good and they can come down to the levels of the bad. The movie is a fabulous improvement from the previous movie and Heath Ledger (RIP) has put on, what I believe, the best performance anyone has ever done in any movie. The lunacy and sheer craziness that his performance brings out, completes the movie and shows the true Joker the way he was created to be. The movie is nowhere near being a superhero movie and is very typically Nolan in a lot of ways. Respect for the movie and Ledger would remain always.

What is the defining point between a man and a machine? In order to obtain an answer to this dilemma, a robot named Andrew Martin (Williams) learns that he is different and exceptional from the other robots. Andrew's master, Richard Martin (Neill) learns of Andrew's unique abilities to recognise art and the abstract, to learn and develop and to be inquisitive about things that he did not know about. Having befriended Richard's younger daughter, Amanda aka Little Miss (Davidtz) along with Richard's motivation, Andrew set out to learn and understand human beings. His ultimate goal to understand the non-mechanical creatures, and to be more like them, led him to the eventual path of evolving into one, bit by bit. The movie has a very deep and profound message attached to it with respect to humanity, human desires, slavery and emotions. The movie brings out these messages in a good fashion, however, its stretched and slow plot make this movie a slight drag to watch. The climax is indeed touching which does make you think deep about the various messages the movie brings out. Had this movie been shorter and perhaps more powerful, it would have been a more entertaining and enjoyable watch.

The third installment of an epic series by an epic director needs to be epic; and it is. The Batman (Bale) takes the fall for Harvey Dent's murder, and for eight years stays off the streets of Gotham City. Bruce Wayne is now a cripple and has invested a fortune in developing a sustainable source of renewable energy. When he learns that the reactor's core can be converted to become a nuclear weapon, he shuts down the project and hence millions of dollars of Wayne Enterprises gets permanently locked onto the project, leaving the company in the red. A cat burglar, Selina Kyle (Hathaway), performs a job where she lifts Bruce Wayne's finger prints and sells it to Bruce's rival. Unknown to Selina, her act triggers a sequence of evens where a terrorist by name of Bane (Hardy) intends to take down Bruce Wayne, The Batman and all of Gotham City for good. Superficially, the movie is still the tried and tested good winning against the evil unlike the more un-conventional approach that the earlier movies took. The biggest let-down of the movie was Bane and his character's inability to live up to the reputation of The Joker. The Dark Knight's core reason for succeeding was The Joker, nothing more and nothing less. No doubt the movie was a brilliant work of art, but minus The Joker and it all turns bland. Bane, was the more conventional villain who is strong and muscular, has a stereotypical behaviour and belief and can be associated with any modern criminal. He is far too conventional and a tad uninteresting. The first half took its own sweat time in establishing the plot and foundation which made the movie slow and a bit boring. The second half picks up pace dramatically to end in a superior climax. Although the climax is impressive, it can still be counted as predictable and not what the audience might have expected. The movie definitely packs a whole lot of punch and entertainment but no aspect of it shines out and can be termed as outstanding. Too predictable and conventional in a lot of ways, but don't get me wrong; its still a treat!

In Central City, USA, the Octopus (Jackson) has let all hell loose with crime and order spiraling out of control. Denny Colt aka The Spirit (Macht) is a crime-fighting super-hero who prowls the streets at night and has the ability to evade death. He longs to end Octopus once and for all but Octopus too holds the unique ability to never die just like him. Sand Seref (Mendes) is Denny's long lost love who left him and the city when they were still children. Denny finds evidence of Sand's return to the city and wishes to bring her back to his life once more. Sand loves golds and jewels and Octopus wants the mysterious Blood of Hercales. Sand steals Octopuses box and Octopuses side-kick Silken Floss (Johansson) steals the box meant for Sand. The movie is created against the film-noir backdrop with shadows and flashes of light being a common appearance. The humour is more sarcastic and negligible and does not make you laugh all out but simply lightens the movie to an extent. The movie lacks and character and does not really give a reason to you to enjoy it. It feels something like a modern Batman with a film-noir touch added to it.
Thumbs up: The effort and effects that might have gone to give the movie its special feature
Thumbs down: Uninteresting plot, film-noir feature may not go down well with all

A modern remake of the 1951 film with the same title, it is yet another movie that talks about global warming and aliens invading the world. Why is it that of all the 196 countries in the world, every alien invasion and natural calamity to strike Earth must first hit the USA, mostly in New York City and almost always in Manhattan? A strange alien globe lands in Central Park and an alien creature in the form of a human being arises from within it. The alien calls himself Klaatu (Reaves) and wishes to speak to the leaders of the world and bring about an awareness of Earth's climatic condition. Klaatu represents an alien community who believes that human settlement is causing irreversible damage to Earth and they must wipe out the human race to preserve Earth. Dr. Helen Benson (Connelly) believes in Klaatu and his mission and tries to release him from the clutches of the US government who intend to take military action against him and the alien race. The movie is a sad drab with almost nothing being exceptional about it. The story is an age old tried and tested plot and the movie attempted to recreate a legacy and hope that people would once again relate to it. A bad attempt and a movie that never should have happened.

Crisp black suits, expression-less faces, black sunglasses and a space gun; that's what you need to have to look like a member of the Men in Black (MiB). In the third installment of the movie, an intergalactic criminal, Boris the Animal (Clement) who prefers to be known as just 'Boris' escapes from his lunar prison and intends to resume his destruction of Earth. Agent K (Lee Jones) had shot Boris' arm off 40 years ago, arrested him and successfully put up the ArcNet, a safety device that would protect Earth from future alien attacks. Boris decides to go back in time, kill Agent K and prevent the ArcNet from ever being deployed and hence fulfilling his quest of destroying Earth. Agent K's partner Agent J (Smith) must now go back in time to 1969 and prevent Boris from doing what he intends to do with the help of a much younger Agent K (Brolin). The 3D aspect of the movie seems to be present purely for marketing and revenue-generation purposes and does very little to make the movie any more interesting. The special effects and graphics are phenomenal, no doubt, but you would very quickly feel your watching any other 2D movie and you might have just wasted that extra money for thrills that never came. The movie comes as a huge improvement over the previous two movies and the second one in particular. The story is more well laid out, more complex and the movie has far more character overall. Many may find it hard to grasp or understand but its that very aspect that makes this movie even more desirable.

The Men in Black are back, or at least one member of the organisation definitely is. Agent K (Lee Jones) retires at the end of the first movie, handing over duty to Agent J (Smith). J has been unable to find himself a new partner or rather has not been able to find himself the correct partner after K left. 25 years ago the Queen of Zartha came to Earth and approached the MiB to keep the 'Light of Zartha' safe on Earth. Fearing that Earth would be compromised if the light would be kept here, the MiB had to refuse and the Zarthan's were forced to leave. Another shape shifting alien, Serleena (Boyle) who too is after the Light, leaves in pursuit of the Zarthan's. Now, Serleena is firmly of the belief that the light is indeed on Earth and wants to find it. The only person who still knows the whereabouts of the light is Agent K, who sadly had wiped his memory clean before leaving MiB. J needs to now find K, get his memory back and locate the light and keep it safe from Serleena. Sadly, the movie is not any major improvement from the previous movie and might just be a tad weaker that the first edition. The plot is weak and biggest question, why does Serleena even want the light in the first place remains unanswered. It is still an interesting enough watch for all just like the earlier movie but does not improve on its flaws at all.

Many have made movies on aliens trying to destroy Earth and many have produced conspiracy theories that there are 'other' people living alongside the humans without them knowing anything. And if you are wondering who exactly is responsible in keeping the alien secret away from human beings, meet the Men in Black. A secret government funded organisation to protect Earth from creatures from outer space, Men in Black agents have no trace, identity or any proof of existence whatsoever. Agent K (Lee Jones) recruits an NYPD police officer James Edwards (Smith) who later comes to be known as Agent J. An alien 'bug' enters Earth and uses the skin of a certain Edgar (D'Onoforio) to disguise itself and blend with the humans. The bug is looking for other aliens on the planet who hold the 'galaxy'. K and J need to find and destroy the bug before he gets his hand on the mysterious 'galaxy' and brings doom to Earth. As mentioned before, alien conspiracy's are nothing new but the touch of sarcastic humour takes things to the next level. It's a wholesome entertainment package with decent action, comedy and some mystery and suspense as garnish on the top. Don't expect fireworks but maybe with some more destructive and gripping action sequences the movie could have been much better.

The rich billionaire who is an antique dealer by day goes by the name of Batman at night. He prowls the city and gets rid of all the scum and filth and wipes the streets of Gotham City clean. Few people know the truth about Bruce Wayne (Keaton) and his secret other side. His quiet and secretive life changes with the appearance of the beautiful and charming photographer, Vicki Vale (Basinger). Jack Napier (Nicholson) is a criminal mastermind of Gotham City who has an unfortunate chemical reaction which leaves him with an altered appearance and the urge to laugh all the time, hence he now calls himself The Joker. The Joker blames Batman for his appearance and seeks revenge and his revenge will be the lives of all of Gotham City's residents. His threat is about to turn into reality only if Batman can stop him and bring him to justice. The movie is a very typical superhero movie with the good winning over the bad and the usual damsel in distress who needs to be rescued from the hands of the good for nothing villain. Apart from Nicholson's exceptional performance, the movie is the average entertainer. It marks the start of a long line of Batman movies which live up to this very day.

In continuation to the previous
Hellboy, but at the same time adapting a different storyline, the second movie narrates the story of the legendary Golden Army. King Balor is the ruler of the elves who clashed with the humans and fought long and bloody battles with no result. One of the elves built him a Golden Army, an army of machines that are indestructible and can win any war. With this power he squashed the humans, but the bloodshed gave him a change of heart and he broke the crown that controls the army into three pieces. He made peace with the humans and gave them a piece of the crown and kept two to himself. Only if the three pieces would come together would the Golden Army once again rise. Balor's son, Prince Nuada (Goss) was against his fathers decision and went into exile. He now returns and has decided to awaken the Golden Army and take the Earth as his. Hellboy (Perlman) is still fighting crime and other paranormal beings with his colleagues Abe Sapien (Jones) a psychic human-fish, Liz Sherman (Blair) his lover who can control fire and Johann Krauss (Alexander & Dodd, MacFarlene (voice)) an ectoplasmic creature and the team leader. They must come together and fight Nuada and not allow him to awaken the army as it will squash the Earth and bring doom to all. The movie is an improvement from the previous version on many fronts by making it more lively and entertaining. The romance between Liz and Hellboy and Abe and Princess Nuala (Walton) might seem to alter the stories speed and continuity but it adds character and makes it feel more wholesome. A sure watch for some good action, a huge helping of beasts and demons and the fair bit of drama.
Thumbs up: Good overall package

Marvel, finally having run out of ingenious ideas to create more bizarre super heroes, has decided to mix all the ingredients into one huge pot and just boil, stir, simmer and serve. The amalgamation includes Thor (Hemsworth) from
Thor, Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) from
Iron Man, Dr. Bruce Banner (Ruffalo) from
Hulk and Steve Rogers (Evans) from
Captain America. The movie is in continuation to
Thor with Loki (Hiddleston) seeking revenge from his brother which he intends to do so by destroying Earth and obtaining Tesseract, an unknown self-sufficient energy source with powers unlimited. With Tesseract gone missing, Dr. Banner is recruited by the Black Widow (Johansson), a smooth-talker, to help develop a way to locate it. Captain America has recently been woken up after being frozen for almost half a century and Tony Stark is just simply summoned to make his presence felt. Thor drops from the sky in search of his brother and thus they come together to form The Avengers, a team of heroes out to save the planet from sure death and destruction. The plot has absolutely nothing attached to it except for the usual good over evil tale with predictable climaxes and outcomes. Many of the more popular characters of Marvel were left out of this series, perhaps due to storyline or marketing purposes. The movie does expect its audiences to have seen the respective movies of all the characters at least once just so that they are in sync with their background and history. Even if you haven't, you wont miss out on too much but its helpful simply to understand the more finer details of every character. All in all, the movie is pure entertainment and does not intend to do anything else apart from that.

Have you watched a movie with the lead performer being someone who should never actually be in that role? Like an industrialist, a sports persons wife, an ex-politician or in this case, a porn star. The year 2017, the entire United States is engulfed in a civil war with Steel Harbour being the only free city in the country. Barb Wire (Anderson) is a mercenary and the owner of a bar in Steel Harbor. She struts her stuff, shows too much cleavage, has her legs exposed at all times, flaunts a 17" waist and can perform insane stunts wearing skin-hugging tight leather outfits. And there is something about a pair of German contraband contact lenses that can allow anyone wearing them to pass through a retina scan without any problem and a whole bunch of people trying to get their hands on it for a variety of reasons. There is too much skin show, in case I forgot to mention that, with everyone speaking in loud whispers with a thick, seductive and I'm-too-sexy touch added to it, especially Miss Anderson. The movie is a complete washout and although I would like to say that the movie is good enough at least to ogle at Pam, that too does not quite happen. The plot is badly glued together, randomly evolving and does not quite get to you even after pausing the movie and thinking about it for half a day. Is there enough already to suggest this is avoidable?

World catastrophe movies are not new but somehow Armageddon stands out from the crowd. Harry (Willis) is a business tycoon who has made a fortune from drilling oil. His hands-on approach and close involvement in his rigs has given him the title of being the world�s most experienced and accomplished driller. He and his team have drilled on every possible location and situation that Earth could throw up to him and this time he faces a new situation, something even beyond Earth. A huge asteroid, the size of Texas, is heading towards Earth which would most likely result in the extinction of all life forms on Earth. NASA has a limited time frame and tries all possible options to put Earth out of harms way and the only solution appears to be to land a team of astronauts on the asteroid, drill a hole 800 feet deep and plant a nuclear bomb within it. Who else than the accomplished Harry Stamper to do the job? The movie seems very far-fetched in most ways. Firstly, the whole concept of landing on an Asteroid and drilling through it is too outlandish for anyone�s likings. The action is very typically Michael Bay with random and incoherent explosions which are over-dramatised. The only commendable aspect of the entire movie is the method in which the audience tends to fuse with the characters and share the emotions and bonds of love and death. The drama adds tremendous value to the movie and without it, the movie would probably be a complete washout.

How do you reduce crime in the city? Prevent crime from ever happening of course. Three mutated human beings, called Precogs, gain the gift of seeing the future and hence detecting crime. Washington D.C. sets up a Precrime department, headed by John Anderton (Cruise), whose task is to learn of any murders predicted by the Precogs and prevent them from happening. With the high success ratio of the operation that the city experiences, Precrime is going national and a member of the Department of Justice, Danny Witwer (Farrell) is sent to evaluate the effectiveness of the department before the crucial decision is taken. Since Precrime solely relies on the vision obtained by the Precogs, the possibility of the actual murder not taking place exists and the question arises, how can you arrest someone for a crime they never did but were only forecasted to do. John staunchely believes in Precrime and its ideology but found himself on the other side of the line when a crime to be conducted by him is foretold, where he supposedly is to murder a man he has never met. The movie is layered with multiple stories that all go in the direction to fathom the dilemma that arises out of the ideology of the Precrime department. Tom Cruise has put on a fabulous performance and is not action focused, as his more recent movies are, and comes out as a more contemporary actor who can do serious acting. The movie's storyline is unique and interesting and coming from the notable Steven Speilberg, one expects as much.

The epic inter-galactic saga comes to an end after five successful movies with the sixth movie aiming to bring a end to the entire story. The movie had garnered millions of fans from throughout the world of all ages, right from those who have seen the very first movie back in 1977 to their sons who enjoyed the prequel movies. Anakin Skywalker (Christensen) is a Jedi warrior and is in love with Padme (Portman). Senator Palpatine (McDiarmid) has been kidnapped by the enemies of the republic and Anakin along with Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) must rescue him. The Jedi council and particularly Master Yoda (Oz) had their doubts on Anakin and were not sure if the force within him was for good or for bad. Anakin breached the Jedi's regulations by submitting himself to desire and want by fathering a child with Padame. Anakin saw a vision of Padame dying during childbirth but did not know what he could do to stop it without the Jedi council knowing about it. Senator Palpatine is in reality the Sith Lord who realised that the dark side was strong within Anakin and lured him to join hands with the context of being able to save Padame. The greatest achievement of the movie is its ability to fluidly join the story lines together although the first movie began halfway through the story.
Episode III and
Episode IV might have been made around 30 years apart yet each and every aspect of new vs old have been cunningly brought together with adequate detailing on the finer aspects. The movie, however, failed to bring out a high climax which would have been deservedly fit for a saga of its kind. That said, it does give a good closing feature which gives you the impression that it has finally all come to an end. This movie is perhaps the most dissected and detailed movie ever, with every vehicle, army, planet and character having a name and story behind it. A worthy finishing movie with only some minor drawbacks.

Time and again I have said that Bollywood lacks recipe and in spite of rapid evolutions in movie-making, ideas still seemed to be ripped out of Hollywood blockbusters. Shekhar Subramanium (Khan) is a game developer for Barron Industries but does not appear to be cool enough in the eyes of his son Prateek (Verma). In a bid to get into his sons good books and make an outstanding video game, Shekhar develops the ultimate super villain, Ra.One (Rampal & Wu). Ra.One is equipped with artificial intelligence where he quickly learns the moves of his players and gets smarter and hence tougher. Things start going haywire and Ra.One from the game comes to life and wrecks havoc. He is out to hunt for Prateek whom he has learnt is his most formidable opponent and decides to hunt him down. In order to stop Ra.One, the good guy, G.One (Khan) is brought to life and to bring an end to this mutiny. Shekhar's wife Sonia (Kapoor) and Prateek are in danger of being killed and it is up to G.One to save them. The movie is a rip-off of Hollywood's best superheroes all in one. Ra.One and G.One share the same suit design as
Iron Man, especially the HART which is a direct copy of the same device on
Iron Man. Many fight scenes are copied from
Terminator including the one from
Terminator 2 where T-1000 rebuilds itself after getting disintegrated by liquid nitrogen. The movie has supposedly tried to use the most advanced special effects to date but yet many scenes seem be hopeless and look tacky even for 20-year-old graphics technology standard. The movie is a total washout and a case study of 'How to create too much buzz for an entirely worthless product'. It still kills me on how G.One managed to come back to life after being killed, any answers?
Thumbs up: Arjun Rampal filled Ra.One's character well with some scenes being executed with finesse
Thumbs down: Copied plot, very poor special effects.
