Boys Dont Cry (1999)

Genre: Crime/Drama/Romance/Biography

Starring: Hilary Swank, Chloe Sevigny, Peter Sarsgaard, Brendan Sexton III, Alicia Goranson, Jeannetta Arnette

A young girl, Teena Brandon (Swank) has a sexual identity crisis and although she has all the sexual organs of a female, she behaves like a boy and is attracted to women. She flirts with Candace (Goranson) a woman she meets at a bar and later gets acquainted to Candace's sister, Lana (Sevigny). Teena is attracted to Lana and flirts with her and the duo eventually fall in love. John (Sarsgaard) and Tom (Sexton III) are friends of Lana and Lana's mother (Arnette) all of whom regularly go out for a night of revelry. Teena manages to gel well with the family, Tom and John and feels that she is leading a whole new life. Teena has a shady background and is wanted back home for stealing cars. Her legal summons come back to haunt her and its not long that her true sexual identity starts coming out for everyone to see. The most outstanding feature of this movie are the performances, especially that of Hilary Swank. Being able to carry such a difficult role with such finesse gave her the Oscar she truly deserved. Other supporting performances of Sarsgaard and Sevigny added positively to the movie and made it a better watch. The only downside in the movie are the middle forty-five minutes which get a bit slow and boring, but it give it some time and it would throw up a fabulous climax. The movie is a critics delight but an average audiences nightmare.

Thumbs up: Hilary Swank and other performances
Thumbs down: It has its own slow and boring moments

Little Fockers (2010)

Genre: Comedy/Drama

Starring: Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson, Dustin Hoffman, Barbara Streisand, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo, Jessica Alba

The third installment of the comic epic continues to narrate the life and lies of Greg aka Gaylord Focker (Stiller) and his father-in-law Jack Byrnes (De Niro). Gay is happily married to Jack's daughter Pam (Polo) but Jack continuously interferes with Gay's family life and tries to dictate terms on family management and parenting. Jack fears that his death clock is ticking and his time is coming. He wants someone to continue the Byrne family history in the same manner in which it was held high for so many centuries. In order to do this, Gay must fulfill Jack's standards and Jack only keeps on dictating and judging Gay's moves. Meanwhile, a drug sales agent, Andi Garcia (Alba) is trying to convince Gay to become the spokesperson for the drug to get a higher salary. Unknown to him, his and Andi's meetings have been interpreted wrongly by Jack who thinks his family needs a 'course correction'. The first thing anyone would notice is that the movie has unnecessarily pulled ahead the previous movies storyline thinking that the audience would still enjoy it. Sadly, the first half of the movie is a complete waste and its only right towards the end that the humour seems to get a bit better but not altogether amazing. If you enjoyed the first two movies, this one would never live up to your expectations. Stiller and De Niro could have done much better.

Thumbs up: Different humour which had scope for improvement but only towards the end
Thumbs down: Tries to bask in the glory of the previous movies

Hellboy (2004)

Genre: Science-fiction/Fantasy/Drama/Action/Romance/Thriller

Starring: Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Selma Blair, Rupert Evans, Karel Roden

Towards the end of World War II, Adolf Hitler attempts at opening a dimensional portal and to free the Ogdru Jahad, a beast from another dimension in order to destroy the Allies. Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin (Roden) succeeds in opening the portal but their attempt is stubbed by an Allied attack on the portal, led by Prof. Trevor Broom (Hurt). Although the Nazi's attempt fails, a creature from the portal manages to pass through which the Allies adopt and name Hellboy (Perlman). Sixty years later, Hellboy grows up with Prof. Broom and does good for the world rather than evil. FBI agent John Meyers (Evans) is recruited by Broom to aid him in his Bureau and look after Hellboy. Rasputin's followers resurrect him and unleash a fearsome beast on the world which multiplies each time it dies. Its finally up to Hellboy to put a stop to Rasputin and prevent him from re-opening the portal. The movie does a very good job of mixing various elements together, yet the romance element does not seem to suit the movie and it makes it a tad boring. Probably if the focus was on the usual action and trying to solve the mystery, the movie would have been a less of a bore. The movie leaves behind a lot of lose and unanswered strings which make you wonder what really is going on. Probably they would get answered in upcoming sequences, yet the audience needs to have a basic understanding of the plot if one expects them to enjoy the subsequent parts. Its not something entirely new, but not something completely boring either.

Thumbs up: Good thrills and action
Thumbs down: Unanswered and messy plot

Band Baaja Baaraat (2010)

Genre: Comedy/Romance

Starring: Anushka Sharma, Ravneer Singh

Two college graduates are poles apart, where one plans on a career the other plans on nothing. Shruti (Sharma) aims on becoming a successful wedding planner, whereas Bittoo (Singh) the son a sugarcane farmer wants to do anything to get away from cutting canes all his life. Bittoo meets Shruti when he is crashing a wedding and starts flirting with her. He soon persuades her to make him a part of her wedding planning company so that he doesn't have to go back to his dad. Shruti agrees, given the condition that Bittoo would not fall in love with her. Being a Yash Raj film, the rest of the story can be narrated flawlessly by a two-year-old, scene by scene. The movie has the very regular Bollywood cliches like the dialogues, plot development, twists, climax etc. There was a slight spark of comedy in the beginning which simply faded away as the movie went along. Probably if that aspect was picked up on, then the otherwise boring plot would still have become a bit more watchable. The movies soundtrack is catchy and appeals to the fans of this genre. Overall, a good two hour paid nap is what you get.

Thumbs up: Ranveer Singh, having no previous modelling or acting experience has done a fairly decent job
Thumbs down: Everything else

Red (2008)

Genre: Crime/Drama

Starring: Brian Cox, Noel Fischer, Kyle Gallner, Shiloh Fernandes, Kim Dickens, Tom Sizemore

The peaceful country life of Avery Ludlow (Cox) becomes not so peaceful when 3 teenage boys attempt to rob him and eventually kill his dog while he was fishing. Danny (Fischer) shot Red at point-blank range while Harold (Gallner) and Peter (Fernandes) stood there laughing and doing nothing. Red was close to him and he swore revenge against them. He wanted them to regret what they did and get punished for doing what they shouldn't have done. Danny and Harold's father, Mr. McCormack (Sizemore) is a highly influential man because of which, both, the sheriff and the district attorney refuse to take any action against. Carrie (Dickens) a local newspaper reporter tries to help him out by reporting his story on TV but soon the channel editor too starts facing pressure from McCormack to stop broadcasting the story. Having nowhere to go, Ludlow takes the law in his own hands and decides to fight the McCormack's for what is right and what is wrong. Brian Cox's performance is worth giving him a golden statue and he very aptly fits the role. The movie cant be labeled as entirely boring but there is nothing exciting about it either. It's one of those movies that you cant find fault with and that you can easily forget about it soon after its over. A nice watch to pass some time without getting bored but not something you would talk about all your life.

Thumbs up: Brian Cox
Thumbs down: Has good scope for plot improvement

This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006)

Genre: Documentary

Starring: (various)

The MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America) and its long serving president, Jack Valenti implemented a ratings system on Hollywood movies in order to curb mature movies from being openly screened. This ratings system did not go down well with Hollywood directors because of its secret and non-transparent feature. Films were supposedly watched by ordinary parents of children aged 3-7 years who rate movies and decide whether the movie is appropriate for children to watch. Movies which get rated NC-17 don't go down well with the director since children below 17 cannot watch those movies and they lose their core movie-watching audience. The MPAA members are heads of the worlds largest media corporations and accusations of bias in ratings in favour of these corporations has been alleged. Kirby Dick, the director of this movie tries to dig deep and reveal the profile of the raters and bring out the truth whether the MPAA is actually doing what it set out to do and what it claims to do. The movie reveals quite a few secrets about the film industry and 'the liberal and free America' quickly appears to become conservative and shy. Probably everyone associated with the movie industry should watch this, perhaps to learn something new or get a fresh perspective.

Thumbs up: Reveals a lot of unknown secrets
Thumbs down: Being a documentary there wasn't much to pick up as flaws

Faster (2010)

Genre: Action/Crime/Drama

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Carla Guigino, Billy Bob Thornton

Freshly out of jail, Driver (Johnson) does not intend to make his life any better. He is hungry, hungry for revenge from those people who killed his brother. Killer (Jackson-Cohen) is a multi-millionaire and a part-time hit man who kills for fun and never for the money. Killer wants to accomplish every hurdle that life can throw at him and aims to become the perfectionist. While Driver is hunting down his targets, Killer has been assigned the task to kill Driver. Cicero (Guigino) and Cop (Thornton) are two police officers who are investigating the murder trail being left behind by Driver. Dwayne Johnson is the macho indestructible self that he always was and is only more meaner. The movie is pretty much predictable and does not throw up anything new or exciting. The movie projects the conflicts within Driver and Killers' minds but that does little to improve the overall impression it gives.

Thumbs up: Dwayne Johnsons presence
Thumbs down: Cliched and predictable

Spy Game (2001)

Genre: Crime/Action/Drama

Starring: Robert Redford, Brad Pitt, Catherine McCormack, Stephen Dillane, Larry Bryggman

1991, just as the cold war is about to end, the United States President is due to visit China in order to ink a trade deal. Days before the presidents visit, a CIA operative Tom Bishop (Pitt) attempts to break into a Chinese prison and rescue a British national, Elizabeth Hadley (McCormack). Bishop gets captured and his arrest puts the United States government and the CIA in an uncomfortable position, especially since Bishop was working on his own. If USA does not claim Bishop he would be executed in 24 hours, however, claiming him could put the trade deal at risk. Nathan Muir (Redford) is a mid-level CIA agent who recruited and trained Bishop. The top-level of CIA try to grill Muir in order to extract more information from him about Bishop and pin-point an incidence which would give them an excuse for not claiming him. Muir realises the ugly game that the CIA is playing and uses his all his skill and experience to save the young boys life. There is a very interesting plot surrounding the movie and it seems to have gotten all the correct things in place. Good cast, good plot but the only aspect that let it down was the lack of character and substance. The movie has enormous scope to become a very enticing watch, if only there was more excitement and feel attached to it. Anyhow, you can never go wrong with a Brad Pitt movie.

Thumbs up: Great plot and performances
Thumbs down: Movie needs more excitement

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I (2010)

Genre: Fantasy/Adventure/Thriller/Action/Drama

Starring: Daniel Radciffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Toby Jones (voice)

The seventh installment of the revered Harry Potter series of children's books gets divided into two parts. The division probably reflected Voldemort and his horcruxes, but maybe not. Harry (Radcliffe) and Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy have destroyed two of the seven horcruxes, magical objects that hold the divided soul of Lord Voldemort (Fiennes). Voldemort despises Muggles or non-magical people and wishes to put an end to them, much to the disagreement of other magical folk. After Dumbledore's tragic death, Harry is left with the task of finding and destroying the 5 remaining horcruxes. Without destroying them, he cannot eventually kill Voldemort. In the previous movie, Harry and Dumbledore found a locket which is supposed to be one of the horcruxes, however, this locket turned out to be a fake, in which the original was stolen by a certain R.A.B. Harry, along with his friends Ron (Grint) and Hermione (Watson) are on a quest for R.A.B and the remaining horcruxes. As a personal opinion, I didn't particularly enjoy the seventh book and the movie reflected just the same. Like the previous movie, this one too simply picks up the major scenes of the movie and glued them together without making any logical sense. For someone completely unfamiliar with the book, this movie is a complete waste, in fact, many people who have read the book might feel a bit lost at some parts too. There was little attempt in making the movie exciting and even the parts which were slightly more exciting were cut short for the sake of conserving screen time. A huge disappointment and an outright insult to the book, felt as if it was made for the sake of being made.

Thumbs up: Special effects
Thumbs down: Bad editing, unexciting and boring

Doomsday (2008)

Genre: Action/Adventure/Science-fiction/Thriller

Starring: Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins, Adrian Lester, David O'Hara, Craig Conway

A disease can break-out anytime, anywhere and to anyone. It gives no warning and it gives no reason. Glasgow, Scotland, 2008, one such deadly virus erupted in this bustling city which quickly spread throughout Scotland like wild fire. The British government built a huge impenetrable wall covering the Scottish borders all around. Scotland was put under quarantine and all its inhabitants were left there to die. London, 2035, the deadly Scottish virus reaches the city of London. 3 years ago the government stumbled upon evidence which showed human survivors in Scotland but did nothing about it. With London under threat, the government finally decides to send a team of soldiers to make their way through Scotland and come back with a cure within 48 hours. Major Eden Sinclair (Mitra) has been chosen to lead the team into what is possibly a wild, carnivorous and deadly territory. At first glance, the movie hugely reminds you of the Will Smith starrer, I Am Legend, with the basic outline being more or less the same. The movie feels dragged, predictable and boring on multiple occasions and seems like a very patchy and a last minute job. Poor performances does not help much in uplifting this movie any further. Could have been better, but only slightly.

Thumbs up: Action, but vaguely
Thumbs down: Performances, plot execution

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Genre: Comedy/Crime/Drama

Starring: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, David Huddleston

How many problems can a rug and your last name give you? A bit too many, as Jeff 'The Dude' Lebowski (Bridges) later learns. Two thugs decide to break into The Dude's house and urinate on his rug for not paying their debt, something of which he has no idea about. He later learns that the thugs had mistaken him for the other Jeff Lebowski, The Big Lebowski (Huddleston) who is a retired millionaire. The Dude decides to pay The Big Lebowski a visit to ask for compensation for a new rug but instead gets assigned to carry out an errand for him. The Big Lebowski's young mistress, Bunny, has been kidnapped and he needs to pay $1 million as ransom and he wants The Dude to deliver the money. The Dude agrees, but things get horribly wrong when Walter (Goodman) The Dude's bowling partner and good friend, starts thinking that the kidnapping is a scam where Bunny simply wants to make a lot of money. He tries to help The Dude but things only get worse when a bit too many people start getting involved, leaving The Dude to bear the brunt. The entire movie rests on the shoulder of one and only one man, Jeff Bridges. The man has put on an outstanding performance to make this movie a wonderful watch. There is no outright humour but more of punchy lines and good acting that brings a grin across your face. The movie gets a bit mystic with a lot of dreamy sequences, which personally, I find highly irritating, but then again is an entirely subjective view. May not be to every ones liking but a good watch nonetheless.

Thumbs up: Jeff 'The Dude' Bridges
Thumbs down: The dreamy sequences

Due Date (2010)

Genre: Comedy/Adventure/Drama

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis, Michelle Monaghan

Bad days will always be bad, no matter how hard you try to make them good. Peter Highman (Downey Jr.) got shot with a rubber bullet by an Air Marshall, and was put on the no-flying list with no baggage or money. He was forced to travel from the east coast to the west coast with a certain Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) an aspiring Hollywood actor, whose mannerisms suggest he is gay who also turns out to be the very man responsible for putting Peter in this situation. Two end up having a disastrous road trip where they crash their car, break some bones and get high on pot. The movie comes from the director of The Hangover and seems like a bad attempt at trying to generate the same popularity. Galifianakis also plays a very similar role to what he did in The Hangover which doesn't really help the movie in any way. The movie looks and sounds very promising but sadly doesn't deliver. The movie lacked any kind of good laughable humour although there was some good scope for the same. It's definitely a DVD movie.

Thumbs up: Performances
Thumbs down: Bad humour, not a very exciting plot

Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987)

Genre: Crime/Action/Drama

Starring: Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, Billie Bird, David Graf, Bobcat Goldthwait, George Gaynes, G.W. Bailey, Leslie Easterbrook, Lance Kinsey, Sharon Stone

Commandant Eric Lasssard (Gaynes) has a brilliant new idea called 'Citizens on Patrol (COP)'. He aims to train and develop ordinary citizens who would help the police in fighting crime. COP gains a lot of acclaim from senior police officials and the idea is enforced. Whilst Commandant Lassard is away on a conference to England, Captain Harris (Bailey) is put temporarily in charge of the academy. Harris despises COP and all of Lassard's officers, and has a special hatred for Sgt. Carey Mahoney (Guttenberg). Mahoney along with the other officers, try to execute the COP programme whereas Harris tries every trick in the book to put it down. The movie has a very unoriginal plot and after having three movies before it, there should have been something new for the audience. The movie is low on the humour aspect too and lacks the punch that it should have had. It is entertaining, but not entertaining enough.

Thumbs up: Good attempt, could be better
Thumbs down: Lack of humour, cliched plot

The Infidel (2010)

Genre: Comedy/Drama

Starring: Archie Panjabi, Omid Djalili, Richard Schiff, Yigal Naor, Amit Shah

A British-Muslim man, Mahmud Nasir (Djalili) is about to get one of the rudest shocks of his life. He is Jewish. His birth parents are Jewish and he was adopted by a Muslim family. This secret was kept hidden from him until he found his adoption certificate after his mother died. Meanwhile, Mahmud's son Rashid (Shah) wants to marry a Muslim girl he loves, the only problem being that her step-father is Arshad El Masri (Naor) a hard-line Muslim leader who stubs the western culture at any given chance. Mahmud must prove to Arshad that he is a good and pure Muslim and at the same time prove to the Rabbi that he knows enough about being a Jew so that he may meet his dying birth-father. The former may not be very hard but for the latter he seeks the help of Lenny Goldberg (Schiff) a Jewish, drunk cab-driver whose very sight used to make his blood boil. The movie doesn't have the kind of humour to make you roll over in splits, but has enough to keep your interest alive. There are those one or two funny moments but that's about it. An interesting multi-cultural movie that is very relevant in today's society where each one of us are trying to carve our own identity with respect to religion.

Thumbs down: Nothing exemplary

Golmaal 3 (2010)

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Action

Starring: Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Kunal Khemu, Shreyas Talpade, Johnny Lever, Mithun Chakraborty, Ratna Pathak

Golmaal is back again to eat your brains, waste your money and make you regret all your life why you dedicated 2 precious hours to watch such nonsense. Well, not really. The movie is far better than the second part and almost as good (or bad) as the first. Gopal (Devgan), Laxman (Talpade) and Gopal's girlfriend Daboo (Kareena Kapoor) run a jet-ski business in Goa. On the other hand, three useless brothers, Madhav (Warsi), Laxman (Khemu) and Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor) are struggling to make a living and decide to start a jet-ski business too. Each of the sides are financed by some small time crook. Puppy (Lever) the crook who finances Madhav and his team, has stolen the queens necklace and has an uncanny habit of forgetting who and what he is doing every few minutes. Madhav and Gopal get into a tussle over who has the right to run the same business on the same beach and both sides swear enmity against the other and seek an opportunity to fight. Pritam (Chakraborty) has adopted Madhav and the boys but they don't know that they are adopted. Same goes for Gopal and Laxman who are adopted by Geeta (Pathak). Geeta and Pritam once loved each other but fate had its way and separated them for many years until they finally see each other in Goa. Will the boys dissolve their hatred to make their parents happy? The movie thankfully does not have the very typical cliched comedy that Bollywood is known to have. Punchy and hilarious dialogues are scattered across the movie which make it a fun watch. The movie spoofs on multiple movies and Indian personalities which makes it an even better entertainer. Even though the lines were good enough to make you laugh, it somehow seemed as if they weren't used to their full potential. Its a no-brainer which you might enjoy, but don't expect too much either.

Thumbs up: Fantastic dialogues, Johnny Lever
Thumbs down: Some boring bits

Wedding Crashers (2005)

Genre: Drama/Comedy/Romance

Starring: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Cristopher Walkin, Rachel McAdams, Isla Fisher, Bradley Cooper

Two good friends, John (Wilson) and Jeremy (Vaughn) are professional wedding crashers. Their sole objective is to meet new women and sleep with them. They learn of Treasury Secretary William Cleary (Walkin) whose daughter is getting married and plan to crash the biggest wedding of the country. They meet the other Cleary sisters, Claire (McAdams) and Gloria (Fisher). John falls for Claire but later learns that she is engaged to Zachary (Cooper) and Jeremy gets Gloria, the young sex-hungry teenager. John and Jeremy get invited to spend some time with the family over the weekend which simply brings John and Claire closer, perhaps a bit too close. The movie is outright predictable and is no different from the thousands of other movies that come out on similar lines. It lacks any kind of outright humour and the story seems to develop at its own leisurely pace. It did get a bit more interesting towards the end, but not too much. Everything about it is quite average, nothing great.

Thumbs up: The concept of having 'wedding crashers'
Thumbs down: Boring, quite average in most aspects

The Social Network (2010)

Genre: Biography/Drama/History

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Armie Hammer, Max Minghella, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield

The Facebook movie was a movie that 500 million people were anticipating. Mark Zuckerberg (Eisenberg) the worlds youngest billionaire who created Facebook, did not have an easy life as most people imagined. After breaking up with his girlfriend one night, and half drunk, Mark hacked into the Harvard servers sitting in his dorm room and created a website which would allow students to rate which of the two girls they think is more hot. The website became a rage, the Harvard servers crashed and Mark faced disciplinary action. The twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (Hammer) along with their friend Divya Narendra (Minghella) told Mark about their idea of creating a social networking website exclusively for the Harvard network. Mark stole their idea and created thefacebook.com. He got financial assistance from his rich friend Eduardo (Garfield) who become company CFO and together they got thefacebook.com to become a campus success. Sean Parker, co-founder of Napster and Plaxo, became interested in Mark's concept and started unofficially advising Facebook, much to the ire of Eduardo. Mark started making too many enemies and before he knew it, Eduardo Saverin and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss were suing Mark Zuckerberg. Jesse Eisenberg seemed to the most appropriate person to play Zuckerberg's role, primarily due to his physical presence. Zuckerberg has mostly been portrayed as a human robot, emotionless, ruthless and highly focused. The only downside of the movie was the very abrupt ending. Most of the movie focused on the lawsuits that Zuckerberg faced and the rest of the story get narrated via the hearings. Perhaps if the movie had a more management angle to it, talking about hurdles and the slow and steady development of Facebook, the movie might have been better. But then again, this idea might be biased due to my association with business management. A highly motivating movie and a must-watch.

Thumbs up: Jesse Eisenberg
Thumbs down: Abrupt end

Robin Hood (2010)

Genre: War/Action/Adventure/Drama/History

Starring: Russell Crowe, Kate Blanchett, Max von Sydow, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, William Hurt

The story of Robin Hood, the outlaw who takes from the rich and gives to the poor. Robin Longstride (Crowe) was an ace archer serving King Richard the Lionheart during his crusade to conquer Europe. Robin agreed to help a dying knight, Sir Robert Loxley of Nottingham and agreed to deliver his sword to his father. With the death of King Richard, his crooked brother John (Isaac) became King of England. Robin broke his acquaintance with the King due to John's unfair rule and travelled north with a group of like-minded soldiers to Nottingham. Sir Walter Loxley (Sydow) Robert's father, requested Robin to stay back as his son so that his land does not get forfeited by the crown. Much to the disappointment of Marion (Blanchett) Robert's wife, Robin had to be her husband. Coming from the stable of Ridley Scott, the movie had high expectations but sadly failed to replicate the success of Gladiator. Russell Crowe left no stone unturned in delivering an outstanding performance. The only chink in the armour is that Robin Hood is conceived to be much younger than what the movie portrays him to be. The movie focuses on the life of Robin Hood before he actually became popular for 'taking from the rich and giving to the poor'. A great entertainer with some fine moments with a vast scope for improvement.

The Men Who Stare At Goats (2009)

Genre: Fantasy/Science-fiction/War/Comedy/Drama

Starring: George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey

During the Vietnam War, a United States Army soldier, Bill Django (Bridges) gained enlightenment on how to make war more peaceful. His teachings and trainings taught soldiers how to use their minds more effectively, which in turn led to the foundation of The New World Army. The army developed psychic soldiers aka super soldiers aka Jedi warriors who could use their minds to higher degree than normal humans. Lyn Cassidy (Clooney) went on to become one of the most powerful of these Jedi Warriors, much to the envy of co-soldier Larry Hooper (Spacey). Years later, a failed journalist, Bob Wilton (McGregor) decides to go and cover the Iraq war in a hope to redeem his life and prove to the world that he is not a failure. He stumbles across Cassidy and accompanies him on a secret mission of whose objective and location is not known to Cassidy. The movie has a very typical George Clooney humour and is the only reason one must watch it. There is no real end objective to the movie. In spite of the impressive star cast, it feels empty and you really don't know what point it is driving at. Performances are probably the only highlight, especially George Clooney's and apart from that, there isn't anything else in the movie. Only for Clooney fans.

Thick As Thieves (2009)

Genre: Crime/Drama

Starring: Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas, Radha Mitchell, Rade Serbedzija, Robert Forster

Also known as The Code. Heist and robbery movies have appealed to a large audience, but their success entirely depends upon the ultimate climax of the movie. Gabriel Martin (Banderas) is a small-time crook from Miami who catches the attention of Ripley (Freeman) who is a more accomplished thief. Ripley wants a partner to steal a pair of Faberg Eggs from a Russian jewelry store known as Romanov. The existence of these eggs are supposedly unknown and Romanov wishes to keep it that way. Ripley claims that his previous partner, Viktor (Serbedzija) was killed by Nicky, a Russian Mafia, because he couldn't pay off his debt. Since Ripley had the reputation of being able to make quick money, Nicky ordered him to steal the eggs in order to pay off the debts. The movie doesn't have a very strong plot for a heist movie and most of the planning and execution of the robbery too doesn't spark enough excitement. The climax twist is only slightly better than the rest of the movie but nothing great either. The audience expects better out of Morgan Freeman movies and this one was a let down.

Thumbs up: A simple watch and forget heist movie
Thumbs down: Needs more excitement attached to the robbery aspect

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)

Genre: Sport/Drama/Comedy

Starring: Gary Cole, Will Ferrell, Jane Lynch, John C. Reily, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amy Adams, Leslie Bibb

Racing and NASCAR ran in the blood of Ricky Bobby (Ferrell) whose estranged father was a race driver. Ricky too went on to become a world famous race car driver until a car crash put him out of the track. A famous French Formula 1 driver Jean Girard (Cohen) has recently entered NASCAR and is giving Ricky a tough time. In an attempt to get the better of Jean, Ricky crashes his car and gets hospitalised for a long time. The trauma of the crash sinks deep into his head and he is unable to drive fast anymore. 20 mph seems like 200 to him and streaking down the race track in his underwear yelling 'fire' when there isn't any, becomes a normal routine of his life. His long-lost father, Reece (Cole) comes back in his life and tries to help him overcome his fear and become the legendary driver that he used to be. The movie is a decent mix of adrenaline rushing sporting action as well as rib-tickling laughter, unfortunately, both, the adrenaline as well as the rib-tickling is quite weak. The climax scene didn't seem to have the kind of energy a racing scene should have and the comedy too was pretty normal and nothing that will want to make you watch the movie a second time. It's a decent entertainer but probably needs that missing component to really get it running.

Thumbs up: Good mix of sport and comedy
Thumbs down: Needs more spice

His bad day continues when he gets mugged and finds that Nick is not at home. Nick's over-enthusiastic neighbour, Lindsey (Liu) concludes that Nick is missing and starts investigating around the house like a crime-scene detective. Nick owed money to two mafia lords, The Boss (Freeman) and The Rabbi (Kingsley) and since Nick was not at home, Slevin gets picked up. The Boss agrees to forget Nick's debt if Slevin kills The Rabbi's son and on the other hand, The Rabbi just wants his money back whether Slevin is Nick or not. In the background, a mysterious assassin called Smith a.k.a Mr. Goodkat (Willis) is carefully pulling the strings and planning a good murder. The movie has a different feel to it that is absent in the normal crime movie that you would stumble across. The climax could have been the highlight of the movie, but which failed to impress. A good crime movie with a good plot, which makes it a great entertainer.

Thumbs up: Climax, plot
Thumbs down: Needs to be more spiced, lacked some good action

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Adventure/Fantasy

Starring: John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke

Three friends are fed up with their adult lives. The friends hardly seem to meet each other and they don't really call themselves 'friends' anymore. Lou (Coddry) gets into hospital for what seems to be a suicide attempt and Adam (Cusack) and Nick (Robinson) decide to pay him a visit. The three friends, along with Jacob (Duke) Adam's nephew, decide to go to Kodiak Valley and refresh their childhood memories from there. They are sitting in a hot tub outside their room when they accidentally spill Chernobly, an illegal Russian drink, which damages the tubs electronics and sends them back in time. The mysterious tub mechanic tells them that they have to do the same things what they did back in 1986 or else the 'butterfly effect' might create disastrous consequences in the future. Lou doesn't want to go get beaten up by six guys, again, Adam doesn't want to break up with his high school crush and get stabbed in the eye with a fork, again, and Nick doesn't want to have sex with Tara because he is married in the future. The adventure back in time has changed a lot of things in all their lives and Jacob finally finds out who his dad is. The movie really isn't the average sex-comedy that one would expect but it still makes a really good watch. Some parts do get a bit serious and dragged, but its tolerable. What was really missing is that one stupidly hilarious scene, which sadly wasn't there. A good watch with a group of friends which would make you want to live another unforgettable night.

Thumbs up: Great entertainer
Thumbs down: Average humour

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)

Genre: Science-fiction/Fantasy/Action/Adventure

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Christopher Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, Frank Oz (voice)

Young Anakin Skywalker (Christensen) is not young anymore and is now a Jedi warrior in-training. Multiple solar systems have decided to break-off from the Republic, making it difficult for the few Jedi Knights to maintain peace and order within the galaxy. Senator Amidala (Portman) is facing an assassination threat since she is spear-heading the movement for the creation of an Army of the Republic to assist the Jedi Knights. Obie-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) and Anakin are assigned to protect Senator Amidala at all costs. Their adventures reveal that Count Dooku (Lee) a former Jedi has joined the dark side and is planning an attack on the Republic. Meanwhile, Obie-Wan learns of the existence of a huge clone army made for the assistance of the Republic, on the orders of a Jedi leader who died several years ago and Anakin falls in love with Amidala and lets his emotions supersede his Jedi mind. The movie is a decent continuation from where it last left, yet there seems to be an evident disconnect from the main storyline. The movie feels like a random filler to the main outline and lacks any kind of climax or twist which would make one want to wait for the next movie. The graphics are extremely refined, although they do look like a video game from time-to-time. A great movie for Star Wars fans with some very good action pieces, but still does not live up to the mark of the earlier movies.

Thumbs up: Great graphics, good action
Thumbs down: Feels disconnected from the main plot

Pineapple Express (2008)

Genre: Comedy/Crime/Action/Drama/Adventure

Starring: Seth Rogan, James Franco, Gary Cole, Danny McBride

Dale Denton (Rogan) is a process server wherein he serves people subpoenas or court summons. He and his marijuana dealer Saul (Franco) are good friends who gives him Pineapple Express, one of the finest weeds he has. Dale has a summon to deliver to Ted Jones (Cole) who turns out to be Saul's main weed supplier. He sees Ted murder an Asian man and panics and runs away. He accidentally leaves behind an unfinished Pineapple Express which Ted identifies and traces back to Saul. Dale runs to Saul's and the two later escape to another weed dealer, Red's (McBride), hideout. Ted and his men are on the lookout for Dale and Saul and suspect them to be a part of their Asian counterparts army and starts hunting them down. The movie cannot be watched for good plots and nice performances. It's supposed to be watched because it might be a bit funny and can be an overall entertaining watch. Seth Rogen does a fairly decent job at being funny but the buck stops there. It is entertaining and watchable but you wont fall off your seat laughing hard.

Thumbs up: Decent entertainer
Thumbs down: Not very funny

Wall Street (1987)

Genre: Crime/Drama

Starring: Charlie Sheen, Michael Douglas, Martin Sheen, Daryl Hannah, Hal Holbrook

Wall Street, New York, the home of some of the largest and biggest companies in the world and the centre for countless amount of money. A lot of people come with great ambitions, where some fall and some rise. Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) was one such ambitious stock broker who is trying hard to get to the top. His father Carl (Martin Sheen) works as a foreman at an airline company and is also its union leader. He gets some inside information about the company which could possibly raise its stock price enabling anyone to make a lot of money. He sells the information to Gordon Gekko (Douglas) a Wall Street investor who ultimately hires Bud to be his stock broker. Gekko manages to persuade Bud to dig up inside information illegally using various contacts which enables Gekko to invest in stocks that are sure to climb. Bud is enjoying the perks and the rich life that Gekko is giving him and turns a blind eye to all the warnings given to him by family and friends. The movie has the usual story of a young ambitious man who treads on the wrong path towards success and ultimately has the very predictable climax. The only respite is the entire 'Wall Street feeling' the movie manages to bring out and the fabulous performance put up by Michael Douglas. The movie would definitely appeal to people who deal with money and stocks in their daily lives, but yet sadly does not manage to bring out anything significantly different. A classic movie that displays American greed and lust for power without any fancy fireworks.

Thumbs up: Michael Douglas and other performances
Thumbs down: The normal story of an ambitious man

He Was A Quiet Man (2007)

Genre: Drama/Crime

Starring: Christian Slater, Elisha Cuthbert, Jameson Jones, William H. Macy

A quiet and introvert office employee, Bob Maconel (Slater) gets pushed around everyday in life by everyone at his office and neighbourhood. He keeps his life to himself and behaves in a slightly manic fashion. He plots on killing some office employees who regularly harrass him and eventually shoot himself, but the exact same task gets executed by another employee, Coleman. Coleman accidentally shoots Vanessa (Cuthbert) assuming her to be someone else. Vanessa was good to Bob and seeing her hurt, he shoots and kills Coleman. Bob becomes the hero and he is no more the lame person that everyone tried to push around. He gets a promotion, good friends, woman and a lot of attention, all for killing a killer. Vanessa survives the shot but is paralyzed and hates her condition. She figured she would be better off if she was dead than alive. The movie is quite slow and is a bit boring during the middle. Its only towards the end that some amount of interest picks up. The movie reflects about the fact that the world is not as easy as it seems and if its only the rich and famous that get any form of attention. An average movie and nothing really fabulous. Watch if you must, else avoid.

Thumbs up: Good performances
Thumbs down: Slow and boring plot

In Bruges (2008)

Genre: Crime/Drama

Starring: Colin Farrel, Clemence Poesy, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, Jordan Prentice

Assassins are usually known to be cold-hearted and emotionless beings. Two assasins, Ray (Farrel) and Ken (Gleeson) are in Bruges for an assignment. Ken is simply in love with the town with all its churches and history. Ray, on the other hand is grumpy and upset because Bruges is the last place on Earth that he would like to be in and enjoys beaches and woman more than ancient stone structures. The core reason why Ray is actually not in the right mood is because during his last assignment, he accidentally killed a young boy. The thought of the boy dying is haunting his mind and he cant get it out of his head. A shooting of a Dutch movie is taking place in Bruges and Ray gets friendly with Chloe (Poesy) a crew member on the sets and Jimmy (Prentice) a midget who is starring in the movie. The movie brings out the aspect that hit men are not cold assassins as most of us think them to be, but are in fact quite human as anyone else. The best part about the movie is that although it has a very simple plot and layout, multiple side stories help in keeping the interest alive. The primary reason why this movie should figure on your 'must-watch' list are the dialogues. Crisp lines that one should pay extra attention to might just give you a thing or two to laugh at. A well thought and executed movie, worth multiple watches.

Thumbs up: Great lines, fine acting
Thumbs down: Slow start

We Are Family (2010)

Genre: Drama/Romance

Starring: Arjun Rampal, Kareena Kapoor, Kajol, Nominath Ginsberg, Aachal Munjal, Diya Sonecha

The Earths depleting environment is a cause of concern for a lot of us. Automobile companies are trying to make more efficient engines, people are trying to conserve energy and Karan Johar is trying to create more water. How? By trying to make you cry more of course. Maya (Kajol) and Aman (Rampal) are leading a happy life with their kids Aleya (Munjal), Ankush (Ginsberg) and Anjali (Sonecha). Maya and Aman have separated but the kids live with Maya. Yet, they are extremely attached to their father and cant imagine a life without him. Shreya (Kapoor) is Aman's girlfriend whom he tries to introduce to the family. The kids hate her cause they think she is stealing their father from them and Maya hates her cause Shreya hates the kids for hating her. Relations start souring amongst all the hate and the once happy family is all set to become the most unhappy family. Boring, sad and depressing are words one can associate with this movie. Performances are sad and weak and a complete washout. Karan Johar has successfully managed to tarnish his reputation by making a movie that might have appealed to the family-centric audience 10 years back but looks heavily out of place in today's world. Yes, you might wet your eyes but not due to heart-rendering emotions but due to boredom which leads to excessive yawning. One more thing, why did he shoot the entire movie in USA when the location has got absolutely no relevance to the plot? A Bollywood remake of Step-Mom.

Thumbs up: Nothing
Thumbs down: Performances, plot, too much of melodrama

Little Man (2006)

Genre: Comedy/Crime/Drama

Starring: Marlon Wayans, Tracy Morgan, Shawn Wayans, Kerry Washington, John Witherspoon

An African-American midget, Calvin (Marlon Wayans) and his partner Percy (Morgan) rob an expensive diamond from a jewelry store. While being pursued by the police, he slips the diamond in a lady's purse and runs away. The lady, Vanessa (Washington) and her fiancee Darryl (Shawn Wayans) are oblivious to the huge priceless diamond they are carrying. In order to get back their diamond, Calvin becomes a baby and is left on Vanessa and Darryl's doorstep. Darryl wants to start a family soon but Vanessa is more concerned about her career. With young baby Calvin in the house, Darryl's wish comes almost true but Calvin plans to bail out of the house the moment he has the diamond in his hand. The movie has a lot of lame humour and is horribly slow. The special effects used to make Marlon Wayans look like a baby is a bad job and his stupid and overdone performances are of no help either. Probably if some jokes were more on the lines of Home Alone the movie might have been a better watch, but it sadly isn't. There are some slightly funny parts but that's about it. Avoid at all cost.

Thumbs up: Zip-zero
Thumbs down: Bad humour, hopeless acting

Paul Rusesabagina (Cheadle) is the manager of the super-luxurious hotel, des Milles Collines. He flatters and bribes influential people by serving them good alcohol in hopes to get associated with them and who could be of use to him during difficult times. Paul is Hutu whereas his wife Tatiana (Okonedo) is Tutsi. He manages to placate the soldiers that come on his doorstep by bribing them and gets his family and neighbours to the hotel. He struggles to take in as many refugees as he can, to ensure their security, to keep the hotel running equivalent to its standards, to look after the safety of his family and be the strength of each and every person who has come to him for help. The movie can be said to be the African Schindler's List and has more or less a similar plot. Don Cheadle has put on a fine piece of acting which makes the movie a classy watch. Brilliant depiction of the genocide which brings out the misery in which so many people are living and how unconcerned the west is to peoples misery. Deserves a five-star applause.

Aashayein (2010)

Genre: Drama

Starring: John Abraham, Farida Jalal, Anaitha Nair, Sonal Sehgal, Ashwin Chitale, Girish Karnad

The story of a chain smoker, Rahul (Abraham) who gets lung cancer due to his smoking habits. He has just 3 months to live and decides to make full use of it. He spends his money left, right and center and believes that since he is a dying man, he is entitled to everything, this attitude and ego get into the way between him and his girlfriend, Nafisa (Sehgal). He learns about a special retreat for dying patients where they can spend the last few days of their life being happy before withering away and decides to relocate there. He meets a whole lot of people at the retreat, including a prostitute, Manju (Jalal) who gained AIDS and is shunned by all the patients, Padma (Nair) a loud-mouthed and rude cancer patient and Govinda (Chitale) a young boy whom people proclaim have super-natural powers. The movie at first sight seems slow, which it is, but give it time and it improves greatly. Each and every performance in the movie is exceptional, big or small, especially John Abraham, Anaitha Nair and Ashwin Chitale, who instead of being overshadowed by the popular image of Abraham, have managed to keep up and support his character throughout. It's a lovely movie and probably many smokers might get an urge to drop the habit right away. The flaw, within the first 10 minutes the rest of the plot becomes predictable but that doesn't make the movie a less enjoyable watch. Is capable of bringing forth a tear even from the cold-hearted.

Thumbs up: Performances of lesser known cast
Thumbs down: First half, predictable plot

Saturday Night Fever (1977)

Genre: Drama/Romance/Musical

Starring: John Travolta, Karen Lynn Gorney, Barry Miller, Joseph Cali, Paul Pape, Donna Pescow

The life of a typical American youth. Work and earn money throughout the week and blow it all away on a Saturday night party with women and alcohol. Tony Manero (Travolta) lived the exact same life and was proud of it. He and his bunch of friends went around the city like Casanova's and spent the entire night away at the nightclub. Tony loved to dance and he was the hottest and most dashing young man who burnt the dance floor. Woman craved for him and he loved the attention he got. The club hosts an annual dance competition and Tony along with his partner Annette (Pescow) were last years winner. Annette was head over heals for Tony and would do anything to get his attention and go to bed with him. Tony, however, was eyeing the new girl Stephanie (Gorney) whom he believes is as good a dancer as he is. Most of the movie reflects about the aimless and ambition-less youth for whom sex and money is everything. The movie has some very amazing 70's dance moves and John Travolta fits the role superbly. The movie might appeal to someone who loves music and dance and they might just pick up some really smooth moves too, but apart from that the movie is a now show. Somewhere during the middle the movie gets slow and boring but steadily picks up pace towards the end. Avoidable unless you want to pick up some dance steps or recall your youthful days of the 70's.

Thumbs up: The smashing John Travolta
Thumbs down: May not appeal to all

Weather Girl (2009)

Nobody wants to risk seeing a similar fiasco on their TV channel. 35 and single, shes worried that she may not find the right guy to settle down with and her life is going to be a mess, which it anyhow is. The movie is plain boring with absolutely nothing to look forward to. A cliched romance plot, average performances and no high point at all makes this movie, as you might guess, a big bore.

Thumbs down: Everything else

Toy Story 2 (1999)

Genre: Animation/Adventure/Comedy/Drama/Fantasy

Starring (voice): Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn, Wayne Knight

Andy's toys are having a good time as usual. The only person not having a good time is Woody (Hanks) whose arm gets accidentally ripped while playing with Andy. Woody gets shelved where he finds an old toy, Wheezy the Penguin whom everyone had assumed was lost. A garage sale is coming up and Wheezy goes up for sale. Woody tries to save Wheezy but gets left behind and later stolen by Al (Knight) the owner of Al's Toy Store. A Japanese toy museum wants to show case toys of Woody and his Roundup Gang, but the toys are now rare and hard to find. Woody and his Roundup Gang comprise of Jessie (Cusack), Stinky Pete (Grammer) and Woody's horse Bullseye and were once a famous cartoon show and all their accessories and toys were very famous. A new era of space toys brought an end to Woody's show. Buzz Lightyear (Allen) swears to save Woody as an act of repayment for what Woody had done for him in the previous movie. With a few other toys, they undertake a perilous journey to get to Al's Toy Store and rescue Woody before it gets too late. The movie doesn't really give the same feeling its predecessor did and there always is this feeling that something is missing. The movie gets a bit boring at one point but swiftly picks up pace and improves. The animations are fabulous for a movie of its time and would do a good job in entertaining an 8-year-old. The previous movie had some high points and some very dramatic and gripping scenes which the second movie completely lacks. A great movie nonetheless with some scope for improvement.

Thumbs up: Animation, hugely entertaining
Thumbs down: Not as dramatic or gripping as the earlier movie

Anger Management (2003)

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance

Starring: Adam Sandler, Jack Nicholson, Marisa Tomei

David Buznik (Sandler) is a man who always gets pushed around and is taken for granted and cant seem to stand up for himself. He keeps his anger locked up inside him which is not helping his life. Things get a little out of hand for him and the court orders him to take up anger therapy. His therapist, Buddy Rydell (Nicholson) has a very funny way to conduct his therapy, which is not going down too well with David. He hates his therapist and he hates all the kinds of stupid things he makes him do. His life goes from bad to worse and the only person he can blame for all of this is Buddy Rydell. First off, the movie is badly slow and boring. There is just not enough humour that one would have liked it to have and feels dragged. Towards the end things do improve, but not substantially. Performances are average, plot is decent but the absolute lack of good humour spoils the show. Just makes you more angry that you ended up wasting an hour and a half of your precious time.

Thumbs up: A plot with good scope for humour
Thumbs down: Needs to be funny, a lot more funny

Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2009)

Genre: Science-fiction/Fantasy/Adventure/Drama/Comedy

Starring: Chris D'Owd, Marc Wootton, Dean Lennox Kelly, Anna Faris, Meredith MacNeil

Three friends, Ray (D'Owd), Toby (Wootton) and Pete (Kelly) are siting in a pub and are discussing a topic anybody else would be least likely to discuss, time travel. Ray strongly believes in it and reads various fictitious books on time travel. He meets Cassie (Faris) who claims to be a professional time traveller and who knows Ray from the future because he becomes really famous. Toby, who is a film fanatic, writes a crazy movie story which, unknown to him, would lead him to an adventure of a life-time. Pete refuses to believe Ray's story and after taking a piss, sees a pub full of dead people including himself. He allegedly went through a time-leak and managed to see the future and is badly shaken. The three friends start an adventure through time and realise that Toby's crazy movie idea made them famous, so famous that they might just get killed. The movie attempts at a wacky and crazy plot and almost manages to pull it off. The first half is confusing, slow and boring and its only during the second half that the movie picks up pace and starts making more sense. Perhaps if the movie was more than just going in and out of time and had some interesting parallel plots running alongside it, the movie might have been an even better watch. A nice movie, but may not appeal to all.

Thumbs up: Attempt at a great plot
Thumbs down: Slightly dragged and may not appeal to every ones tastes
