South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1997)

Genre: Animation/Comedy/Spoof

Starring (voiceover): Trey Parker, Matt Stone

If your not aware of even what South Park is and if your not a very big fan of them, you might just want to turn your head the other way and not read this. However, this movie throws up very big surprises. The four kids of South Park are very excited for the new Canadian-made, upcoming movie, Asses of Fire starring Terence and Phillip. Things take a turn when the parents of these kids object towards the vulgarity and profanity projected in this movie and how it affects young children. Their protest move takes an ugly turn which turns out into a disaster and brings the world to the brink of a third world war. However the kids of South Park are not gonna sit around. Adults are stupid as usual and need to be taught a lesson, and they're out to prevent the execution of Terrence and Phillip and save the world. The movie's start is just like what you would except, typical South Park stupidity which put Govinda or Jim Carrey to shame. However the movie picks up a story and improves as it goes on, and believe it or not the movie actually gives out a good, decent, responsible social message. Matt Stone and Trey Parker's amazing voice over for almost all the characters of the movie is simply superb. South Park fan or not, its a must watch. Many people might not agree with me and would probably not be able to watch more than half an hour of this movie, hence the dual ratings.

Rating: 5.4 (Non South Park fans)
8.5 (South Park fans)

Milk (2008)

Genre: Drama/Romance

Starring: Sean Penn, James Franco

I dont know if i did the correct thing by classifying the movie as 'romantic'. The movie is a true-life story on a homosexual activist in USA, Harvey Milk (Penn). Milk strongly fought for political representation of gays in the government, much to the dislike of many people. Along with his lover Scott, (Franco) as his aide-de-camp, he fights for equality of gays and gains a very strong support. With many wins and losses for the city seat and the assembly seats, he is finally proclaimed as the first gay man in the histroy of the United States to be elected to a political office. Sean Penns superb acting is unmacheable, especially since he is playing a role of a gay man, a very tough role to execute. Some love-making scenes between the men might repel people, but just shut your eyes and let the moment pass and enjoy the rest of the movie.

Punch Drunk Love (2002)

Genre: Drama/Comedy

Bary Egan (Sandler) is a small-time businessman, whose life is a mess. He's consistently hounded by his seven sisters, which has kept him away from the family and prevented him from finding a life-partner. He keeps getting inconsistent fits of anger and ends up wrecking things which doesn't help things either. One day one of his sisters tries hooking him up with a friend of hers. A relationship is on the verge of rising, however out of desperation he once calls a sex phone line and the phone girl tries to extort money from him. Adam Sandler looks hilarious in his in-your-face blue suit and does a good piece of acting. However you need a lot of patience and time to get past this movie

Spanglish (2004)

Genre: Drama/Romance

Flor (Vega) along with her daughter Christina (Bruce) immigrate to USA from Mexico in hope for a better living. Flor gets a job as a caretaker in celebrated chef John Clasky's (Sandler) household. The family asks her to stay at their beach house for the summer and she has no option but to take her daughter along. Priorities change when the John's wife Deborah (Leoni) takes a liking for Christina much to John and Flor's disapproval. The movie has an interesting story but lacks some certain essence needed to keep you fixed in one place.

Murder by Death (1976)

Genre: Crime/Mystery/Thriller/Comedy/Spoof

Starring: Truman Capote, (Various)

5 famous detectives from all over the world have been called to millionaire Lionel Twain's (Capote) house. He announces to all his guests that at exactly 12 midnight a murder will take place. The murderer and the victim, both are supposed to be one amongst those sitting in that room. What ensues is a twisted murder mystery. The good thing about the movie is that it manages to create a lot of interest right till the very end. Its only when the entire plot gets revealed does the movie fall flat on its face. Many twists and turns remain unanswered and many reasons given in the movie for a particular incident don't sound very satisfactory and one can find many flaws in it. The weak rating given to the movie is only because of a very very poor ending. Maybe that is the 'comedy' aspect the movie is trying to bring about.

Luke Shipiro (Peck) a college graduate is wasted in life and makes a living selling dope from his ice-cream cart. He trades drugs with his psychotherapist Dr. Squires (Kingsley) for free treatment. He finds himself being attracted to a girl from his school Kristin (Janssen) who turns out to be his therapists daughter. Eventually he gets used and dumped by her and his life is a total mess. The only person left is his doctor whose life too isn't going very well either. Like two lost souls they take up doping all day long. Its quite a wasted movie and an equally wasted performance.

You Kill Me (2007)

Genre: Action/Crime/Comedy/Romance

Starring: Ben Kingsley, Tea Leoni

An alcoholic hit man Frank (Kingsley) is sent away from Buffalo to rehab after consistently failing to do his job because of his bad habit. Rehab isn't very easy for Frank and he finds it hard to quit. He finds companionship in a recently widowed woman Laurel (Leoni) and confides in her, who in turn helps him to kick off his habit. Meanwhile things back at Buffalo aren't all that good with an Irish gang threatening to overthrow his family business. Frank needs to get back and save his business for good. Ben Kingsley somehow felt a bit out of place. He lacked the character and attitude to be a hit man and not to mention his frail, weakened and old physical appearance. Maybe some hardcore action hero with a comical twist would've been more apt for the job.

Elegy (2008)

Genre: Drama/Romance

Starring: Ben Kingsley, Penelope Cruz, Dennis Hooper

An aged old man falls in love with someone much younger than him. This is not your stereotypical story of a paedophile, although it sounds like one. David Kepesh, (Kingsley) a literature professor gets attracted towards his student Consuela (Cruz). He confides in his friend George (Hooper) who advices him to stay away from it and to realise that he is a full grown man. However David finds that its not very easy to stay away from Consuela and slowly the duo develop a close and intimate relationship. Having a very simple story, the movie does not go straight to the point and instead takes on an off-beat journey in the main characters' lives. A lazy but watchable movie.

Hot Fuzz (2007)

Genre: Crime/Action/Mystery

Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost

A London based super-cop, Nicholas Angel (Pegg) is the perfect cop. So good that his colleagues want him to get transferred to the country so that they actually get the chance to do some work. However the country isn't as calm and quiet as Angel had thought it would be. The moment he steps into Sandford, he starts witnessing a string of murders who everybody including the law enforcement department thinks are mere accidents. Angel is not convinced and eventually gets cracking. With an over-eager partner Danny Butterman (Frost) he sets out to get some law and order in place in the small town. However he is in for a very big surprise. The movie has a good twist in the end and doesn't fall flat on its face like any other average murder mystery. The movie tries to encompass multiple moods in it to reach out to different audiences. It has its own bit of laughs and some utterly gory scenes. Pegg tries hard to do a James Bond and does an acceptable job.

Cidade dos Homens (2007)

Genre: Action/Drama/Crime

Starring: Douglas Silva, Darlan Cunha, Jonathan Haagensen

English title: City of Men. Based on the life of young kids living in the slums of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and the perils that come along with leading such a life. A gang of youngsters brandishing guns rule over the slum, and all is fine until the gang leader Madrugado's (Haagensen) sidekick betrays him and joins a rival gang to overthrow him as gang leader. Both sides go all out to build an army, one to protect what is theirs and the other to take back what they think is theirs. Two friends Acerola (Silva) and Laranjinha (Cunha) have grown up seeing guns and bloodshed at a very young age. Both of them don't know their father's and decide its time to go and uncover the truth about their past. The backdrop of this movie is very similar to another Brazilian-French movie, Cidade dos Deus aka City of God, which shares a similar name, location and story. Not a big surprise considering the fact that both the movies were made by the same producer. The movie sends out a social message towards being a good and responsible parent and the adverse effects bad parenting may have on a child.

The robbers make all the hostages wear same suits and masks as they are wearing so the cops cant make out between one another. Meanwhile the bank president Arthur Case, (Plummer) has a deep dark secret that's stored inside the vault in the bank that he is refusing to share with the cops (Washington, Dafoe, Ejifor). The robbers don't have any demands, and nobody knows who they are. I'm not going to reveal the twist in the end. It's better you just go and watch it.

Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny (2006)

Genre: Musical/Comedy

Starring: Kyle Gass, Jack Black

For all those who are unaware, Jack Black and Kyle Gass have a rock band of their own knows as Tenacious D. The movie spoofs the story on how their own band was formed. KG (Gass) and JB (Black) are two rock-obsessed dudes who are out to make their living in music. They want to know the secret behind the success of major rock bands and find one small thing in common.; they all used 'the pick of destiny' (pick, meaning a guitar pick, used to strum a guitar), which makes the user a guitar playing god. This pick was supposed to be once a part of a demon and in a battle, he lost a small piece of his body which was used as a pick later on. Until the daemons body remains incomplete, he can never rise. The guitaring duo set out to claim the pick as their own. However the last missing piece goes back to the dreaded demon and he comes alive. The two friends battle the demon using their guitars and music and send the hideous creature back to where he belongs. As you might have clearly realised, the story is all hogwash but it is a must see for all rock fans. If your not, don't bother.

There Will Be Blood (2007)

Genre: Drama/Adventure

Starring: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano

The movie dates back to the late 18th century, when oil was recently discovered in America and business boomed. Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) is an oil tycoon who is approached by Paul Sunday (Dano), to purchase his piece of land and tap oil from it. Daniel accepts the offer and soon realises the land has much more oil potential than he thought. He starts acquiring land left, right and centre and his greed just keeps increasing day after day. The movie shows the transformation money and greed can bring about in the nature and living of a person. Daniel Day-Lewis has shown some phenomenal piece of acting which has brought him a well deserved Oscar. Unlike the movie title, there actually wasn't really too much of blood, but then again that's something quite irrelevant.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

A Psychotic killer Anton (Bardem) who kills anyone who dares cross his path, senses the money with Llewelyn and chases him across the country. Sheriff Bell (Jones) discovers the bloody trail left behind by Anton and joins the chase and tries in vain to prevent the inevitable murder. The movie has a very sudden and abrupt end that might confuse you and over and above, the actors in the movie speak with a very heavy Texas 'cockery' accent which makes it a bit hard to understand dialogues if you aren't familiar with it. Over and above it is a good movie although it requires your constant attention and focus if your to understand it.

Capote (2005)

Genre: Drama/Crime

Starring: Catherine Keener, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Clifton Collins Jr.

A very touching story, true to say. Two murderers guilty of murdering a Kansas family are sentenced to death. Famous novelist Truman Capote (Hoffman) wants to write a book on the murders and that fateful night. He ends up becoming extremely close to Perry Smith (Collins Jr.) one of the convicts of the murder. Capote knows that Perry will not talk about the fateful night so easily, and he tries to get close to him, hoping that he would open up one day. Capote's friend and fellow novelist Harper Lee (Keener) doesn't approve of the methods Capote is trying to apply in order to extract the information. Truman Capote was often considered a homosexual person, and Hoffman has done a brilliant piece of acting by bringing that feature out. The movie takes you inside the thought process of a novelist and the mixed feelings and emotion he goes through while trying to write a tragic tale.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)

Genre: Drama/Romance

Starring: Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz

One really does wonder what the entire purpose or goal was behind making this movie. Vicky (Hall) and Cristina (Johnson), two American girls going on a holiday to Barcelona, Spain. They encounter a Juan Antonio (Bardem) who invites them to his bed. Cristina dosen't mind accepting it, while Vicky finds it a bit rash. Cristina decides to move in with him who later gets to meet his ex-wife Maria (Cruz) who decides to get back to her husband. It's just showing the same lot of people paired up in different permutations and combinations irrespective of what their gender is. It brings out the fact that people are seriously confused on who they love and choices should be made wisely. I never knew Penelope Cruz could do such fabulous acting, and yes my perception towards her has changed . Watch it if you need a travel guide on Spain.

Love Actually (2003)

I am not a person who would willingly watch or recommend romance movies but this movie makes a big exception. Almost everyone who has seen this movie would agree with me. This multi-starrer shows different aspects and viewpoints of the same thing; love. Love is not the same for everyone and doesnt always turn out in the same way, and that is exactly what this movie wants to showcase. Betralyal, extra-marital affairs, marriages, young love, old love, young loves old, you name it and this movie has it. Reminds me of the Bollywood film Salaam-e-Ishq, only it just isnt as bad. No point in narrating the story, just go watch it.

Sex Drive (2008)

Genre: Adventure/Comedy

Starring: Josh Zuckerman, Amanda Crew, Clark Duke

What is so special about the Sex Drive Unrated edition? As the director promises, 'more tits and dick'. Is that something the viewer is really craving for? The 'unrated' version simply means computerised nude males and females strutting in front of the camera and having absolutely no relevance at all to the movie. The makers of the movie had a very wrong notion that nudity and sex sells, and more you have of it, the better. The movie does have a good story-line, maybe even American Pie material but somehow the director was unable to execute the movie in that fashion and bring it to that level. Virgin guy Ian (Zuckerman) steals his brothers car and goes for a cross country drive with two friends Lance (Duke) and Felicia (Crew) to go meet a girl he met in a chat room. The tale gets even more twisted on the way which does give you a good laugh or two. If you really do want to watch this movie, i would highly recommend watching the censored version as it makes things more enjoyable and you aren't forced to stare at an old mans testicles for one whole minute.

Rescue Dawn (2006)

Genre: Action/War

Starring: Christian Bale, Steve Zahn

Some movies just dont improve. Rescue Dawn has the very typical war movie story. Soldier gets lost in some god-forsaken place and needs to be rescued. Hasn't the Behind Enemy Lines series of movies over-done that already? Based on a real life story during the Vietnam War, Lieutenant Dieter Dengler's (Christian Bale) plane crashes somewhere in the jungles of Vietnam and gets captured by the Vietcong. He meets Duane (Zahn) and other American POW (Prisoners of War) who collectively team up and escape, which they do and get rescued by the American forces. Sounds familiar? Very familiar! The beginning and end seem to keep your interest alive but somewhere in the middle the movie just drags on endlessly.

Genre: Comedy/Romance/Drama

Starring: Will Smith, Eva Mendis, Kevin James

After about 3 years, Im watching this movie for the second time, so that means it is a good watch. Will Smith as always is brilliant; he just never seems to fail. Hitch (Smith) is the 'Date Doctor'. Have a girl problem? Well then call the date doctor and he'll fix it for you, only this time the date doctor has his own love problem which just ends up complicating almost everything in his life. Albert Brennaman (James) is a successful businessman who has a crush a famous celebrity. A very shy man, he decides to approach the Hitch for some love advice. Gossip journalist Sara Melas (Mendis) thinks its better to stay away from men cause theyre all the same. She starts discovering Albert's advances and wants to do a background check on him. She meets Hitch but dosent suspect his involvement with Albert. A cute urban romance-comedy movie, with its own bit of fun and twists.
