School for Scoundrels (2006)

Genre: Drama/Romance/Comedy

Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Heder, Jacinda Barrett, Michael Clarke Duncan

A depressed and lonely meter reader, Roger (Heder) lacks any form of self-esteem and pride. He is the kind of person who would, if bullied, would pay for somebody else's fines and also give away anything else he had. A friend of his recommended him to visit Dr. P (Thornton) the very same man who helped him gain some self-confidence and motivation. Roger joins the program and is shocked by the absurd tasks that Dr. P and his assistant Lesher (Duncan) make them do. However, as time progresses, the results of the classes start paying off and Roger gains a lot more confidence than he had, so much so, he even asked Amanda (Barrett), the girl he loves, out with him for dinner. Yet, all that glitters is not gold and every medication that doctor prescribes to you will have side-effects. Roger learns horrible things about Dr. P and his past and learns about the side-effects that this therapy would have. The movie shares its name with a 1960 British movie with its storyline being greatly altered. The movie feels very incomplete in many aspects. The humour is negligible, romance hardly exists and the evolution of Rogers image from being a loser to being a winner is not shown with correct progression. A very average movie with average everything else.

Thumbs up: If I think really hard, maybe the slightly interesting story
Thumbs down: Average everything

Just Friends (2005)

Genre: Romance/Comedy/Drama

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Faris, Christopher Marquette, Chris Klein

Back in 1995, an overtly obese high school youth, Chris Brander is the best of friends with the college cutie Jamie Palamino (Smart). When every guy tries to get into pants, Chris is unable to tell Jamie his true feelings and lands up being 'just friends' rather than being 'lovers'. Fast forward to the current year and Chris decided to leave New Jearsey for LA where he has made a life for himself as a record producer. He has lost weight, looks handsome, has all the money and women in the world. He has gained a whole lot of self-confidence which has made him into something of a casanova. His boss wants him to sign Samantha James (Faris), who is the next ultra-sexy pop queen in the making that all American boys have their tongues hanging for, and take her to Paris just to make her feel happy enough to sign with his company. Samantha is sexually attracted towards Chris but the same feelings are not reciprocated by him. When the two have to do an emergency landing at New Jersey, he lands up meeting all his old friends, including Jamie. His love and affection grows for her once more and he needs to find a reason to stay back in Jersey, for just one more day maybe. The movie is not the melodramatic romance with a sprinkling of comedy, it's a comedy movie with a sprinkling of romance. Anna Faris has stereotyped herself as the dumb blonde and she continues to be that once more, just better. The humour comes solely from her with Reynolds being comedy supporter. A perfect blend of romance and comedy, only if they didn't have to mess up the end.

Thumbs up: Great humour, Awesomely hilarious Anna Faris
Thumbs down: The end seems very erratic and stupid

Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)

Genre: Action/Crime

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, Christopher Eccelston, Robert Duvall, Chi McBride, Vinny Jones, Delroy Lindo, Timothy Olyphant, Will Patton

A remake of the 1974 movie by the same name, it tells the story of a notorious car thief that operated in Los Angeles. Memphis Raines (Cage) was the best car-jacker you could find in the city and had gained himself a reputation of sorts. He was forced to leave the business due to pressure from his mother and to prevent is younger brother in walking the same line as him. Unfortunately, Kip Raines (Ribisi) becomes exactly like his brother and gets himself in trouble with an English crime boss, Raymond Calitri (Eccelston) when he is unable to fulfill his assignment. Raymond wants to kill Kip but is willing to let him go if Memphis steals 50 cars for him in 72 hours. Failing to do so would see not only Kip killed but also Memphis and the rest of his family. The movie is perfect for car-lovers and if adrenaline-rushing chase sequences is what you crave for, this movie would more than just deliver. The last 30 minutes of the movie with the entire LAPD chasing Nicolas
Cage in '67 Mustang Shelby GT 500 easily figures in anybody's 'Best movie car chases' list. Loved by the loving, might not appeal to everyone else.

Thumbs up: Amazing cars, beautiful chase scenes
Thumbs down: The car-drama is all focused towards the end, the action is great but not amazing

Eagles In The Chicken Coop (2010)

Genre: Documentary/Drama

Starring: Kathleen Quinlan, Kenny Luper, Sara Simmonds, Bruce Abbott, Dwight Ewell, Brent Florence, Chloe Snyder

Hollywood is the land of big dreams, where people from world over come to realise their life's true ambitions. However, everybody doesn't become what they set out to be, no matter how passionate you are about it. The movie traces the true-life journey of Armondo Jones (Luper) and Bill Williams (Florence) who were two good friends that set out to Hollywood to become what they always wanted to be. Like all others, they lived a life of struggle where good offers were hard to come by, but eventually their persistence paid off. Nameless Studios, is a low and medium budget movie production house who saw one of Armondo and Bill's short films and were impressed. Nameless Studio's offered Armondo and Bill to produce, write and direct their new venture, The Lone Rancher. What Nameless did not tell them was that this new venture was not the average feature film, but a late-night mature movie. It would be the kind of movie where the story hardly mattered and all that the audience was interested in is the sexual relationship between the various casts. Armondo and Bill did not believe in the prescribed formula as given to them by Nameless studios and wanted to bring out a story where the sex scene's would make sense and add to the storyline. The movie is created on a very unique concept where it can be classified as a 'documentary' on first sight, but dig a little deeper and you realise that it may not be the case. It appears as a 'making of the movie' kind of footage but in reality it is a staged 'making of the movie' and recreates the event. The movie predominantly appears to be like a documentary due to the authentic and convincing acting which gives a very 'real' feeling rather than a 'movie' feeling. Acting apart, the movie isnt the most interesting 90 minutes. It's not that bad but its not very great either.

Thumbs up: Great acting
Thumbs down: Not the most exciting

Elizabeth (1998)

Genre: History/Biography/Drama

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Christopher Eccelston, Joseph Fiennes, Richard Attenborough

When King Henry VIII consummated with his mistress after his wife failed to conceive, their offspring was Queen Elizabeth (Blanchett). However, Elizabeth was third in line for the accession of the throne, of which her brother died young leaving her elder sister Mary to ascend the throne. With the death of Hency VIII, England was divided into two parts, the Catholics and the Protestants. Mary was a staunch Catholic who intended to wipe out the Protestant faith from the country. Mary died of child-birth leaving the Protestant Elizabeth to become Queen of England. Elizabeth became Queen in harsh times. The treasury was depleted, the army was short of arms, there was holy war brewing, her life was threatened by Catholics attempting to assassinate her and she was unmarried and hence did not have an heir to the throne. She fell in love with Lord Robert, the Earl of Leicester (Fiennes) but was forced to consider marriage outside England, particularly with Spain and France, for political alliances. The movie beautifully shows the early life of the Queen and all the difficult decisions and hardships she had to face. Cate Blanchett has performed with finesse and fit perfectly into the shoes of the role. Although this movie only focuses on the first half of her life, the second half is portrayed in the sequel to this movie that comes almost 10 years after.

Thumbs up: Cate Blanchett
Thumbs down: Needed more enthusiasm; felt bland

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (3D) (2012)

Genre: Comedy/Adventure/Animation/Drama

Starring (voice): Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Frances McDormand, Jessica Chastain, Bryan Cranston, Martin Short, Tom McGrath

The third, and perhaps final, episode of the four friends who ran away from their zoo enclosures to experience a better life, are finally on their way back home. When Skipper the Penguin (McGrath) and his crew decide to take their warp speed travelling aircraft to Monte Carlo to win some big money, Alex the Lion (Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Rock), Melman the Giraffe (Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippo (Smith) sense that they may never come back to fetch them. The crew decide to find them and make them go back home to NYC with King Julien the Lemur (Baron Cohen) and his sidekicks in tow. Animal Control officer Captain Chantel DuBois (McDormand) is called after the animals wreck havoc in one of the casino's and is asked to put the creatures where the belong, on her living room wall. The movie is a perfect example of 'old wine, new bottle. The main elements for which we all loved the first movie have been collected and repackaged into this brand new offering. King Julien is the same, his song is the same and the old characters seem to be there for no reason. Even Melman had no role as the 'doctor' as he always was, Gloria wasn't shown for her 'beauty' and Marty wasn't the eccentric that we loved. Its still a watchable movie, but is far from where the original epic was made.

Thumbs up: Fabulous 3D effects
Thumbs down: No big improvements in terms of humour

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

Genre: Drama/Comedy

Starring: Will Ferrell, Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Thompson, Queen Latifah

A very unique plot and a fresh breath of life from the conventional and overdone movie story lines. Harold Crick (Ferrell) is the average middle-aged American man who leads a normal life, going to work and doing what any other person would do. He is an extremely punctual person whose every step in life is determined by the minute to the ultimate precision that he even counts the number of strokes each time he brushes to make sure that they are the same every day, not one too more or one too less. His clockwork schedule goes for a toss when one day he starts to hear voices in his head. That voice is actually of the movie's narrator who is briefing the audience about Harold, telling us all about him when suddenly the narrator actually becomes a part of the movie and Harold can listen to every word that is being said. He cannot concentrate at work or do anything for that matter when the narrator is busy explaining us, the audience, more about Harold. Karen Eiffel (Thompson) is a renowned author who is suffering from writers block and cannot seem to move ahead in her story. The publishers send Penny (Latifah) to be her assistant and help her get over the block and complete the story within the deadline. The movie trumps on the story and is a marvelous watch simply because its so unique. Many might find it boring and ridiculous but it is the kind of movie that needs time. Although some audiences might figure out most of the movie before the half-way mark, it ends with a pleasant climax which too could have been pre-determined with some effort. That said, the movie should not be dissected but watched with patience. Will Ferrell does a commendable job after shunning the string of comedy movies he is known to do and experimented with something more contemporary.

Thumbs up: Will Ferrell, unique and refreshing story
Thumbs down: A bit bland and boring at parts

Police Academy 6: City Under Siege (1989)

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Crime/Mystery/Action

Starring: Kenneth Mars, G.W. Bailey, Lance Kinsey, George Gaynes, Bubba Smith, David Graf, Michael Winslow, Marion Ramsey, Leslie Easterbrook, Bruce Mahler, Matt McCoy, George Robertson

The sixth movie of the Police Academy series promises to be just like the previous versions, insensible. The series initially started out as depicting misfits who are shunned by society and intend on becoming police officers and hence join the Police Academy. The second movie maintained the 'academy tradition' but all movies subsequently followed the exact same plot line. A crime problem occurs in the city, Captain Harris (Bailey) wants a quick promotion and hence tries to prevent Commondant Lassard (Gaynes) and his team to crack the case and wants to hog all the lime light for himself. In the end he is the one who gets outdone whilst the others are congratulated. Been there, done that; far too many times. The movie can be far better only if the humour was improved and there was a healthy story to supplement that humour. Michael Winslow and his mimicry is astounding and the only piece of comedy is provided from Bailey and Kinsey. It's a nonsensical waste of valuable time, effort and money and one should confine themselves only to the first two movies and not dare venture beyond it.

Thumbs up: Michael Winslow's voices
Thumbs down: Bad plot, horrible performances, repetitive story compared to the previous movies

Ferrari Ki Sawaari (2012)

Genre: Drama/Sports/Comedy

Starring: Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Ritvik Sahore, Satyadeep Mishra, Seema Bhargava, Nilesh Divekar, Deepak Shirke, Aakash Dabhade,

A simple story of a simple, idealistic father Rustam Deboo aka Rusy (Joshi) and his son Kayo (Sahore) who hail from a middle-class Parsi family residing in Mumbai. Rusy's father, Deboo (Irani) is a veteran cricketer who had a career ending injury at a young age due to which he has developed a grudge against the sport. Kayo is passionate about cricket and is touted to become the next Sachin Tendulkar, provided he get good training. Rustam works at the Regional Transport Authority (RTO) and his close friend Baboo Didi (Bhargava) is a wedding planner who wants to know where can she find a Ferrari in Mumbai. Baboo Didi's client is a local gun-totting politician whose son is getting married. She planted the unique idea to rent a Ferrari for the baaraat in order to make the wedding more glamourous. Now that the idea is sold, she found herself in a fix since Rustam informs her that the only Ferrari in the city belongs to the one and only Sachin Tendulkar and there is no way he would let her rent it for a day. Baboo Didi wants Rusy to request his father to pull some strings due to his cricket past and to try and get Sachin to lease his car. The movie comes from the director that gave the world super-hits like Munnabhai and 3 Idiots. Unfortunately, with such acclaimed siblings, the audience had high expectations from the movie which has fallen short of fulfilling such expectations. The story is hugely idealistic, extremely Bollywood-isque and is predictable to an extent. Its a pure family entertainer and is not made to win accolades at any awards ceremony. The performances though are simply outstanding and the man who shines above all is Boman Irani. Is performance of the old and grumpy Parsi 'bawa' comes natural to him but he decided to garnish it a bit to make it even better. Worth one watch but fireworks wont be shooting at the end of it.

Thumbs up: Boman Irani, a regular family entertainer
Thumbs down: Typical Bollywood, not expected from Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Udaan (2010)

Genre: Drama

Starring: Rajat Barmecha, Aayan Boradia, Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor

A story of the life of Rohit (Barmecha) a teenage boy who was removed from his school due to misbehaviour. His mother died when he was young and was brought up by his father, a man whose face he hasn't seen in the past 8 years he spent at school. Bhairav Singh (Roy) fits the precise definition of a cold-hearted father. He demands to be called 'sir' at all times, would beat and abuse Rohit if he overrules any of his decisions, squashed all his hopes of becoming a writer and forced him to study engineering amongst many others. Rohit also met his half-brother, Arjun (Boradia) someone whose existence he was never aware of and also someone who goes through the same ordeal as Rohit but at a far younger age than him. The movie shows a family where the elders are orthodox and expect the household to be run as a prison camp and not as family. The words love never existed and shall never exist and the only thing that would be present is respect and silence. The movie excels with stupendous performances, especially from the child actors with Ronit Roy being an exact replication of the character. The movie is slow, which is inherent for its genre, but is recommended to all and an amazing watch.

Thumbs up: Acting
Thumbs down: A bit slow, single-story

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Genre: Fantasy/Drama/Romance/Action/Crime

Starring: Chow Yun-Fat, Cheng Pei-pei, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, Xian Gao, Chang Chen

The moment anyone sees someone who remotely looks like a China man, the words 'Kung Fu' or 'martial arts' quickly appears in ones mind. That also applies to movies which feature many such characters. Li Mu Bai (Yun-Fat) is an accomplished Wudang swordsman, feared throughout the lands and is unbeatable. Li Mu Bai intends to give up being a warrior and asks his friend and secret love, Yu Shie Lien (Yeoh) to deliver his sword, The Green Destiny, as a gift to a friend of his. The sword is more than 400 years old with a blade unmatched in sharpness and can make any warrior extremely agile. Jen (Ziyi) an aristocrats daughter has been secretly learning how to fight from her governess who goes by the name of Jade Fox (Pei-pei). Fox, being illiterate, could not read the secret manuals of Wudang to become a true warrior but those teachings were absorbed by Jen who could read but never shared her learning's with her master. Jen steals The Green Destiny to escape from her family burden of marriage and become a free warrior. Li Mu Bai is impressed with Jen's swordsmanship and desires to train her provided she return the sword, something that Jen is not willing to part with. The movie has enough action and more than enough Kung Fu, but what doesn't seem pleasing is the slightly over-the-top action sequences that seem inhuman to perform. Jumping metres into the air on top of houses, walking on water and hoping over tree tops, it all seems to far fetched and unbelievable. The movie seems to end without any purpose or objective and appears to be extremely aimless. Its entire mid-section is unwanted and is simply present to infuse the angle of Jen's love and could have easily been ignored or cut short. If its Kung Fu action sequences that you seek then this movie prescribes just what you want, otherwise it is pretty much a washout.

Thumbs up: Good action sequences, in number and quality (barring the human flying)
Thumbs down: Unwanted side stories, aimless plot development

21 Grams (2003)

Genre: Crime/Drama/Romance

Starring: Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Naomi Watts, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Melissa Leo

Normal individuals, each living a separate life culminate together due to an incident, big or small. Its a plot line that is not new to the movie industry and success or failure of the movie solely depends upon the depth and relevance of that very incident. A mathematics professor, Paul Rivers (Penn) has a fatal heart condition due to his smoking habit and needs a transplant if he wishes to survive. He has managed to get back to his wife Mary (Gainsbourg) although their relationship is very distant. Jack Jordan (del Toro) is a convict who is out on parole and learns the way of Jesus to redeem himself of his sins and give up on his alcohol and drug problems. Christina Peck (Watts) is a happily married mother of two beautiful daughters who has managed to put her drug abuse behind her and move on to become a responsible and caring mother. The three families come together when Jack accidentally runs over Christina's husband and two daughters and kills them. Christina decides to donate her husbands organs and his heart reaches Paul who undergoes a transplant. Jack is filled with guilt and decides to turn himself to the police. Paul wants to find out whose heart is inside him. Christina needs a shoulder to cry on and cannot seem to move on in life. The incident that brings the three together is well crafted but the movie is far too slow and stretched and demands a lot of patience from the audience to sit through the entire 2 hour ordeal. The performances are good with Naomi Watts particularly standing out for her exceptional performance. The movie can be acclaimed on technical grounds but lacks the entertainment factor that the average viewer is always looking for.

Thumbs up: Naomi Watts and her exceptional acting
Thumbs down: Too slow and stretched to be likable

Alpha Dog (2007)

Genre: Crime/Drama/Biography

Starring: Justin Timberlake, Emile Hirsch, Fernando Vargas, Shawn Hatosy, Bruce Willis, Ben Foster, Sharon Stone, Anton Yelchin, Chris Marquette

Young kids, too much money and way too much freedom are some sure shot ingredients for witnessing some disastrous results. Johnny Truelove (Hirsch) is a small time weed dealer in California who gets his supply from his very own father (Willis). His uber-rich friends are gangsters in the day and party animals by night who assist him in all his dealings. Jake Mazursky (Foster) is one of Johnny's henchmen who sell his drugs but ends up owing $1,200 to him which he cant afford to pay back. When Jake's parents refuse to repeatedly bail him out due to his mistakes he ends up having a spat with both, his parents and Johnny. Jakes half-brother Zack (Yelchin) looks up to his brother and aspires to live the life of drugs, alcohol and woman and decides to run away from his home and attain freedom. In an act of frustration and desperation, Johnny, his right hand man Frankie (Timberlake) and TKO (Vargas) abduct Zack from the streets and decide to hold him as ransom for the $1,200. When Johnny realises the consequences of abducting Zack, he gets desperate and when you get desperate the situation only keeps getting worse. The movie is based on a true life incident that took place in August of 2000 which changed names. It recreates the murder of Nicholas Markowitz ordered by Jesse James Hollywood over a paltry sum of $1,200. The movie gives a more realistic picture about drug-related crime on the street and gives the viewer a more realistic experience of the consequence of such crimes. A great crime movie to watch, although a bit slow and stretched.

Thumbs up: Good performances and great realistic portrayal of the crime
Thumbs down: Messed up climax scene, slow and a bit stretched

A Lot Like Love (2005)

Genre: Comedy/Drama/Romance

Starring: Amanda Peet, Ashton Kutcher, Kathyrn Hahn

Many people, including me, are firmly of the belief that romance-comedies are simply for the fairer sex and can either be too boring or too melodramatic. Once in a while there comes a stray movie that although can be classified within the above description, its still a movie you would recommend to others to watch with all your heart. Oliver (Kutcher) is the average young man just out of college and is looking for a job to keep himself busy and earn a steady income. Emily (Peet) is the exact opposite from Oliver who adorns rocker girl clothing, has street attitude and is too in-your-face to like Oliver. Logic goes for a toss and Oliver and Emily become friends or lovers, depends in which way you look at it, but are never able to keep a steady relationship. They have random meetings and years go by without looking at each other which gives them the impression that they might be in love but again, not. It might come across as the very typical boy-meets-girl, which in fact it is, but if you put an old wine in a fabulous new crystal bottle within a handmade wooden casket and perhaps some rubies to further adorn it, it might just be appreciated. Point is that the movie is fun, its got enough light humour to keep you entertained, it doesnt have tears streaming down the actors face the moment they depart and it has enough footage of the two just having a good time. A brilliant and smooth watch that you can kick back and enjoy and not worry about getting bored or too emotional.

Thumbs up: Smooth and entertaining
Thumbs down: It is more or less perfect the way it is but perhaps some more humour never did anyone harm

Men in Black III (3D) (2012)

Genre: Science-fiction/Action/Adventure/Comedy

Starring: Will Smith, Jemaine Clement, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma Thompson

Crisp black suits, expression-less faces, black sunglasses and a space gun; that's what you need to have to look like a member of the Men in Black (MiB). In the third installment of the movie, an intergalactic criminal, Boris the Animal (Clement) who prefers to be known as just 'Boris' escapes from his lunar prison and intends to resume his destruction of Earth. Agent K (Lee Jones) had shot Boris' arm off 40 years ago, arrested him and successfully put up the ArcNet, a safety device that would protect Earth from future alien attacks. Boris decides to go back in time, kill Agent K and prevent the ArcNet from ever being deployed and hence fulfilling his quest of destroying Earth. Agent K's partner Agent J (Smith) must now go back in time to 1969 and prevent Boris from doing what he intends to do with the help of a much younger Agent K (Brolin). The 3D aspect of the movie seems to be present purely for marketing and revenue-generation purposes and does very little to make the movie any more interesting. The special effects and graphics are phenomenal, no doubt, but you would very quickly feel your watching any other 2D movie and you might have just wasted that extra money for thrills that never came. The movie comes as a huge improvement over the previous two movies and the second one in particular. The story is more well laid out, more complex and the movie has far more character overall. Many may find it hard to grasp or understand but its that very aspect that makes this movie even more desirable.

Thumbs up: Great story
Thumbs down: Complex for a few

Men in Black II (2002)

Genre: Science-fiction/Action/Comedy/Crime

Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Lara Flynn Boyle, Rip Torn, Johnny Knoxville, Rosario Dawson

The Men in Black are back, or at least one member of the organisation definitely is. Agent K (Lee Jones) retires at the end of the first movie, handing over duty to Agent J (Smith). J has been unable to find himself a new partner or rather has not been able to find himself the correct partner after K left. 25 years ago the Queen of Zartha came to Earth and approached the MiB to keep the 'Light of Zartha' safe on Earth. Fearing that Earth would be compromised if the light would be kept here, the MiB had to refuse and the Zarthan's were forced to leave. Another shape shifting alien, Serleena (Boyle) who too is after the Light, leaves in pursuit of the Zarthan's. Now, Serleena is firmly of the belief that the light is indeed on Earth and wants to find it. The only person who still knows the whereabouts of the light is Agent K, who sadly had wiped his memory clean before leaving MiB. J needs to now find K, get his memory back and locate the light and keep it safe from Serleena. Sadly, the movie is not any major improvement from the previous movie and might just be a tad weaker that the first edition. The plot is weak and biggest question, why does Serleena even want the light in the first place remains unanswered. It is still an interesting enough watch for all just like the earlier movie but does not improve on its flaws at all.

Thumbs up: Still a good entertainer
Thumbs down: Weak plot, not any better than the previous movie

Rating: 6.7/10

Men in Black (1997)

Genre: Science-fiction/Crime/Action/Comedy

Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent D'Onoforio, Linda Fiorentino, Rip Torn

Many have made movies on aliens trying to destroy Earth and many have produced conspiracy theories that there are 'other' people living alongside the humans without them knowing anything. And if you are wondering who exactly is responsible in keeping the alien secret away from human beings, meet the Men in Black. A secret government funded organisation to protect Earth from creatures from outer space, Men in Black agents have no trace, identity or any proof of existence whatsoever. Agent K (Lee Jones) recruits an NYPD police officer James Edwards (Smith) who later comes to be known as Agent J. An alien 'bug' enters Earth and uses the skin of a certain Edgar (D'Onoforio) to disguise itself and blend with the humans. The bug is looking for other aliens on the planet who hold the 'galaxy'. K and J need to find and destroy the bug before he gets his hand on the mysterious 'galaxy' and brings doom to Earth. As mentioned before, alien conspiracy's are nothing new but the touch of sarcastic humour takes things to the next level. It's a wholesome entertainment package with decent action, comedy and some mystery and suspense as garnish on the top. Don't expect fireworks but maybe with some more destructive and gripping action sequences the movie could have been much better.

Thumbs up: Great all rounder
Thumbs down: Not enough action

Brother White (2012)

Genre: Comedy/Drama

Starring: David A.R. White, Reginald Vel Johnson, Jackee Harry, Logan White, Anna Margaret, Gibson Sjobeck, NRaca, Senyo Amoaku

James White (David A.R. White) has been asked by the church to relocate to Atlanta from his current church in Los Angeles and Pastor a church there. It's everything he ever wanted but after moving there his family finds it extremely hard to adjust. The church is located in an African-American community where they appear to be complete misfits. The church would be also be raised to the ground within the next 9 days if the church management does not repay the outstanding bank loan of $10,000. Pastor White needs to devise a scheme to collect the money, get the local people to come back to church and console his daughter Emma (Margaret) who cannot seem to be able to adjust in the new environment. The movie is comforting and uplifting with the random sprinkle of humour making it an easy watch. It has a heavy religious sentiment attached to it and urges people believe in the lord once more. Although the movie puts on a good show, there are many gaps that should have been filled in order for it to truly stand out. Perhaps some more religion, drama and emotions might reach deeper within the hearts of people and get the correct message across rather than simply skimming through the top. Good attempt but could have been far better.

Thumbs up: Sends across a positive message
Thumbs down: Lacks the emotional drama needed for a movie of its kind

Notorious (1946)

Genre: Drama/Romance/Crime

Starring: Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Leopoldine Konstantin

Set against the end of World War II, the American government is trying to trace various Nazi loyalists spread around the world and closely monitor their activities. One such loyalist, Alexander Sebastian (Rains) has been located in Brazil and has come under the American governments radar for his business dealings and friend circle. The government decides to recruit Alicia Huberman (Bergman) to become an undercover agent and gain entry into Alex's life. Alicia's father and Alex were very good friends and Alicia's father was recently tried and sentenced to prison by an American court. An American agent, Mr. Devlin (Grant) convinces her take the assignment and flirt with Alex and try to extract and share as much information as possible. Devlin falls in love with Alicia but he realises that she has an assignment to do. Alicia too loves Devlin but is not sure of his feelings and does not know what to do with this new assignment that she is due to take up. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the movie comes typically from his style of movies and nicely blends romance and drama with the story of an undercover spy. The movie's beginnings and the eventual build up of the excitement factor is slow and weak and is not all the gripping to keep your eyes glued on the screen for every passing second. It's not that the movie isn't well made, but it somehow lacks the charm that a Hitchcock movie should have.

Thumbs up: Fabulous performances, brilliant blend of opposite genres
Thumbs down: Lacks excitement and suspense
